Circulating Silence. The Reaction to Rachel Carson’s Book Silent Spring (1962) in Scandinavian Gardening Magazines

open access: yesHoST, 2023
This article examines the reception of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring in Scandinavian family gardening magazines. In Sweden, Norway and Denmark, family gardening associations were broad organisations with significant social impact. They were the most

Properties of GRB Host Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The transients following GRB970228 and GRB970508 showed that these (and probably all) GRBs are cosmological. However, the host galaxies expected to be associated with these and other bursts are largely absent, indicating that either bursts are further ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Small Science, Little Fraud? Scale and Misconduct in Contemporary Science

open access: yesHoST
Given that issues of scale and size are commonly used in characterizations of small science, this paper explores their possible relationship with the prevalence of scientific misconduct.

The Evolution of Knowledge: Rethinking Science in the Anthropocene

open access: yesHoST, 2018
The paper argues that humanity has entered a new stage of evolution: epistemic evolution. Just as cultural evolution emerged against the background of biological evolution, epistemic evolution began as an aspect of cultural evolution and now dominates ...

Variations on topological recurrence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Recurrence properties of systems and associated sets of integers that suffice for recurrence are classical objects in topological dynamics. We describe relations between recurrence in different sorts of systems, study ways to formulate finite versions of

Uniformity in the Wiener-Wintner theorem for nilsequences

open access: yes, 2012
We prove a uniform extension of the Wiener-Wintner theorem for nilsequences due to Host and Kra and a nilsequence extension of the topological Wiener-Wintner theorem due to Assani.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Is Small Science Cargo Cult? Mimicry, Dependency and Agency in the Margins of Big Science

open access: yesHoST
This paper argues that the application of the notion of cargo cults to science provides a valuable heuristic for revisiting the dichotomy between big and small science.

The Perfect Pair: Bloch, Febvre, and the History of Science and Technology

open access: yesHoST, 2020
Launched in 1929 by Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre, the Annales gave rise to a groundbreaking approach to history known as the École des Annales. Based on the study of social history over a long-term period or longue durée, the new paradigm emphasized the ...
