Isolation and Characterization of Novel Lytic Bacteriophages Infecting Epidemic Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) poses a significant clinical problem given the lack of therapeutic options available. Alternative antibacterial agents, such as bacteriophages, can be used as a valuable tool to treat the infections ...

The Predictability of Phytophagous Insect Communities: Host Specialists as Habitat Specialists

open access: yes, 2011
The difficulties specialized phytophagous insects face in finding habitats with an appropriate host should constrain their dispersal. Within the concept of metacommunities, this leads to the prediction that host-plant specialists should sort into local ...

Community impacts of anthropogenic disturbance: natural enemies exploit multiple routes in pursuit of invading herbivore hosts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: Biological invasions provide a window on the process of community assembly. In particular, tracking natural enemy recruitment to invading hosts can reveal the relative roles of coevolution (including local adaptation) and ecological sorting ...

No effect of host–parasite co‐evolution on host range expansion

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, 2012
AbstractAntagonistic co‐evolution between hosts and parasites (reciprocal selection for resistance and infectivity) is hypothesized to play an important role in host range expansion by selecting for novel infectivity alleles, but tests are lacking. Here, we determine whether experimental co‐evolution between a bacterium (Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 ...

The Host-Range of a Streptomyces aureofaciens Actinophage [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1961
A VIRULENT actinophage destructive to S. aureofaciens cultures and chlortetracycline (the trade mark of American Cyanamid Company for chlortetracycline is ‘Aureomycin’) fermentations had previously been reported1. Limited data regarding its host-range obtained at that time showed that it was a monovalent phage.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Interpreting the effects of DNA polymerase variants at the structural level

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using MAVISp and molecular dynamics simulations, we analyzed over 60 000 missense variants in POLE and POLD1 from ClinVar, COSMIC, cBioPortal, and saturation mutagenesis. Identified mechanistic indicators, including stability, binding, and long‐range, enable structural interpretation, providing ACMG‐like evidence for possible reclassification of VUS ...

Identification of virulence associated loci in the emerging broad host range plant pathogen Pseudomonas fuscovaginae

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Pseudomonas fuscovaginae (Pfv) is an emerging plant pathogen of rice and also of other gramineae plants. It causes sheath brown rot disease in rice with symptoms that are characterized by brown lesions on the flag leaf sheath, grain ...

The Host Range of Multi-Host Endophytic Fungi

open access: yesCurrent Science, 2018
Mature leaves of 224 angiosperm plant species belonging to 60 families and growing in Andaman Islands, and the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu were sampled for the presence of endophytic fungi. Fungal genera such as Alternaria, Arthrinium, Aureobasidium, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Glomerella/ Colletotrichum, Drechslera, Fusarium ...

Metastasis on pause: How dormant tumor cells stay hidden within the tumor microenvironment and evade immune surveillance

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dormant cancer cells can hide in distant organs for years, evading treatment and the immune system. This review highlights how signals from the surrounding tissue and immune environment keep these cells inactive or trigger their reawakening. Understanding these mechanisms may help develop therapies to eliminate or control dormant cells and prevent ...
