Thermal shape fluctuation effects in the description of hot nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesPhys.Rev.C68:034327,2003; Erratum-ibid.C68:059902,2003, 2003
The behavior of several nuclear properties with temperature is analyzed within the framework of the Finite Temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (FTHFB) theory with the Gogny force and large configuration spaces. Thermal shape fluctuations in the quadrupole degree of freedom, around the mean field solution, are taken into account with the Landau ...

Impact of Surface Roughness on the Yield Drop of Hot‐Rolled AZX311 Mg Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Rough‐surfaced AZX311 Mg alloy samples have significantly lower yield strength than polished ones due to stress concentrators forming at V‐notch irregularities. Surface profilometry confirms higher Ra values for rough samples. Highest hardness values were observed near scratched surfaces, indicating strain localization effects near the rough surface ...

Partitioning and Coarsening Dynamics of Precipitate‐Strengthened Cr‐Si Alloys: The Role of Ge, Pt, and Mo

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The microstructure of Cr‐rich Cr‐Si‐alloys is maintained by alloying with Ge, Pt, and Mo. The effects of these elements on A15‐phase fraction, partitioning, microstructural stability, grain size, and hardness are combinable. Molybdenum is found to be the most promising alloying element for microstructural stability during high‐temperature exposure.

Revealing the γ′ and γ″ Phase Fractions of Additively Manufactured and Differently Heat‐Treated Nickel‐Base Superalloy IN718 by Atom Probe Tomography and Their Impact on Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing is a promising route for the production of Ni‐base superalloys for turbine applications, such as Inconel 718. Nonetheless, it induces various changes in the microstructure and performance of these materials. One such change is the incidence of the δ‐Ni3Nb phase, whose impact on microstructure, aging precipitate fractions, and ...

Overlapping hot spots and charge modulation in cuprates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Particle-hole instabilities are studied within a two dimensional model of fermions interacting with antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (spin-fermion model). In contrast to previous works, we assume that neighboring hot spots overlap due to a shallow dispersion of the electron spectrum in the antinodal region and include in the consideration effects of

Analysis of Temperature and Stress Distribution on the Bond Properties of Hybrid Tailored Formed Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Hybrid materials enable high‐performance components but are challenging to process. This study explores an inductive heating concept with spray cooling for steel–aluminum specimens in a two‐step process including friction welding and cup backward extrusion.

The Hot Hand and Its Effect on the NBA [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
This paper aims to revisit and expand upon previous work on the "hot hand" phenomenon in basketball, specifically in the NBA. Using larger, modern data sets, we test streakiness of shooting patterns and the presence of hot hand behavior in free throw shooting, while going further by examining league-wide hot hand trends and the changes in individual ...

A Perspective on Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing of High‐Nitrogen Alloyed Stainless Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective article explores an innovative powder metallurgical approach to producing high‐nitrogen steels by utilizing a mixture of stainless steel and Si3N4. This mixture undergoes hot isostatic pressing followed by direct quenching. The article also examines adapting this method to laser powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB/M) to overcome nitrogen ...

Dimensionless Investigations on Energy Conversion and Analysis of Interlayer Time in Laser‐Based Powder Bed Fusion of Polymers for Polyamide 12 with Nanoadditives and Polypropylene

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the energy conversion in powder bed fusion of polymers using laser beam for polyamide 12 and polypropylene powders. It combines material and process data, using dimensionless parameters and numerical models, to enable the prediction of suitable printing parameters.

Heavy Quarks in Strongly Coupled Non-Conformal Plasmas with Anisotropy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
We analysis physical observables of heavy quarks in gravity models describing strongly coupled non-conformal plasmas with anisotropy via the gauge/gravity duality. The focus lies on the binding energy of static quark-antiquark $(q\bar q$-)pairs, the maximum distance (screening distance) of a bound $q\bar q$-pair and the drag force on uniformly moving ...
