In this work, a new criterion for estimating hot tear susceptibility called overall hot tearing susceptibility (OHTS) is proposed to determine hot tearing tendency in the mould region during continuous casting. The OHTS criterion takes into account the cooling rate, brittle temperature range, strain rate and thickness of the brittle region.

Hot Tearing in Cast Aluminum Alloys
Materials Science Forum, 2011MPI and CANMET, both members of the Light Metal Alliance, launched a research project to study hot tearing in aluminum alloys. In this project, a reliable test method to quantitatively evaluate hot tearing was developed, and the processing variables affecting hot tearing tendency were also investigated.

Determination of Strain during Hot Tearing by Image Correlation
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2007The evolution of strain and strain at the onset of localization resulting in a hot tear has been determined for alloys AA6111, AA3104, CA31218, and Al-0.5 wt pct Cu during solidification. A bar constrained at both ends was solidified with a window above the hot spot region to allow observation of hot tear formation and growth.
