Hot-tearing in Aluminium Copper Alloys

Cast Metals, 1988
An experimental technique has been developed to investigate hot tearing. In this technique either the load or strain built up during casting could be measured as a function of the mould wall temper...

Determination of Strain during Hot Tearing by Image Correlation

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2007
The evolution of strain and strain at the onset of localization resulting in a hot tear has been determined for alloys AA6111, AA3104, CA31218, and Al-0.5 wt pct Cu during solidification. A bar constrained at both ends was solidified with a window above the hot spot region to allow observation of hot tear formation and growth.

Hot tear susceptibility of aluminium–silicon binary alloys

International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2010
AbstractHot tear susceptibility (HTS) of Al–Si alloys in the 0–5–3·0 wt-%Si has been determined using a constrained rod casting test and a quantitative index. Hot tear susceptibility was seen to decrease with increasing silicon content. Hot tear severity varied directly with solidification shrinkageβ, the non-equilibrium freezing range ΔT′, dendrite ...

In situ observation of hot tearing formation in succinonitrile-acetone

Acta Materialia, 2001
Abstract Hot tears have been induced during the solidification of a succinonitrile-acetone alloy by pulling the columnar dendrites in the transverse direction with a pulling stick. The opening of the mushy zone (hot tears) always occurred at grain boundaries.

Hot tearing evaluation for aluminium alloys

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2016
Hot tearing during solidification of aluminium alloys castings can be a serious problem. This phenomenon is well known but still insufficiently investigated. Hot tearing occurs in form of irregular cracks in metal castings that develop during solidification and cooling.

Hot tears in grey iron castings

2015
In general, one of the main casting defects due to residual stresses are cracks (tears). Cracks may be defined as a material separation, which is caused by mechanical and dynamic overloads. There are cold and hot cracks, depending on the temperature range in which they occurred.

Hot tearing of aluminium - copper alloys

2003
For many aluminium alloys, hot tearing susceptibility follows a lambda curve relationship when hot tearing severity is plotted as a function of solute content. In the past, there has been some difficulty quantifying hot tearing. Traditional methods rely upon measuring electrical resistivity or the number and/or length of cracks in tests such as the ...
