Two physicists engage in a courteous and exhilarating exchange. Jeremy England argues that descendants of the Crooks fluctuation theorem play, and should play, a role in explaining life’s origin. He is, in his optimism, a nightingale among pigeons. Brian Miller is equally persuaded that these theorems are of little relevance in explaining the origin of

A hot-wire pyrometer for measuring gas temperatures with a high sensitivity has been developed. The method can easily be extended to measurements of surface temperature. The principal elements of a hot-wire pyrometer are a fine wire inserted into the gas and a photomultiplier for measuring the radiation emitted from it.

Abstract This book is a comprehensive, easy-to-access reference book for students, engineers and researchers engaged in the practical use of any aspect of 'hot wire' anemometry (HWA). The book introduces the logical framework for a computer based HWA system and identifies the individual steps in the complete experimental procedure ...

Hot-wire anemometer for spirography
Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, 1998The use of a constant temperature hot-wire anemometer flow sensor for spirography is reported. The construction, operating principles and calibration procedure of the apparatus are described, and temperature compensation method is discussed. Frequency response is studied.

A flying hot-wire arrangement has been developed for the measurement of the velocity characteristics of the flow around airfoils, and particularly in regions where negative values of instantaneous velocity occur. The mechanism and signal processing system are described and appraised by comparing stationary and flying wire measurements obtained in the ...
