Oldest Cretaceous latimeriid elucidates cranial evolution in derived and extant coelacanths (Actinistia, Latimeriidae)

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Abstract The fossil record of coelacanths (Actinistia) is diminished by several nominal gaps that obscure vital information pertaining to the clade's evolutionary history. Latimeriidae, the family that includes the extant coelacanth Latimeria, in addition to the Cenozoic, has an outstanding missing gap of 50 myr during the Mesozoic, with no records of ...

Freshwater amphibians and squamates from Villeveyrac (lower Campanian; Hérault, France): palaeodiversity, palaeoenvironment and implications for the Late Cretaceous palaeobiogeography of the European herpetofauna

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Abstract The Late Cretaceous witnessed numerous transgression–regression sequences and the onset of a global cooling phase at the start of the Campanian. In the European archipelago, these environmental changes, combined with active plate tectonics, facilitated the formation of ephemeral land bridges that served as dispersal routes for a variety of ...

Mechanism of CO2 and NH3 transport through human aquaporin 1: Evidence for parallel CO2 pathways

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 1, Page 336-365, 1 January 2026.
Abstract figure legend The figure illustrates the permeation pathways for CO2, NH3 and H2O through AQP1. The panel on the left, with the wild‐type protein under control conditions, CO2 moves through monomeric pores (2 of 4 shown) but predominantly via an alternate pathway (perhaps the central pore of the tetramer).

How Does a Delicate Insect Wing Resist Damage? Chitin Orientation Is Adapted to the Mechanical Demands at the Nanoscale

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 37, Issue 51, December 23, 2025.
Nanoscale chitin fiber orientations in the insect wing play a critical role in adapting to complex mechanical demands. These findings reveal two distinct and functionally adaptive chitin orientation patterns in the membranes that vary regionally, optimizing mechanical resilience and deformation control.

Dual‐Interface Symmetrical‐Structure Solar Evaporators with Overturning Controllable Salt for High‐Efficiency Desalination

open access: yesSmall Structures, Volume 6, Issue 12, December 2025.
We developed a cotton fabric/MoS2 composite by coating cotton with a MoS2/dopamine solution. This dual‐interface symmetrical solar evaporator (DS‐SFE)exibits self‐cleaning and salt‐rejection properties. It achieves 95.5% solar absorption and a 40.0 kg m−2water supply flux.

Development of criteria suitable for machine learning based on morphological hierarchical trees [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The goal of this work is to study image criteria to be assigned to morphological trees such as Max/Mintree, Binary Partition Trees or similar representations to be able to classify the tree node and to identify the presence of object of interest in the ...

Geometry Formation and Software Realization of Straight Profile Hourglass Worm

open access: yesJixie chuandong, 2022
Considering the status quo of processing,to avoid conventional spatial meshing theory, and relying on actual production projects, the forming principle of straight profile hourglass worm is analyzed in terms of geometry. After processing verification,it meets the design and use requirements.

Could photoperiodic responses have evolved before the emergence of circadian clocks?

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 6, Page 2707-2713, December 2025.
Summary Plants use photoperiod (i.e. day length) as a seasonal cue for timing when to flower. This ability, known as photoperiodism, also underlies phenomena such as migration, seasonal reproduction, and hibernation in animals. Because a circadian (daily) clock underlies the day/night length timing mechanism in most organisms, it has been generally ...
