Transcriptomic analysis of the housefly (Musca domestica) larva using massively parallel pyrosequencing

open access: yesMolecular Biology Reports, 2011
To explore the transcriptome of Musca domestica larvae and to identify unique sequences, we used massively parallel pyrosequencing on the Roche 454-FLX platform to generate a substantial EST dataset of this fly. As a result, we obtained a total of 249,555 ESTs with an average read length of 373 bp.

Effects of Heterologous Protein Substitutions of Fishmeal on the Culture of the Chinese Soft‐Shelled Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis): A Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
With the global aquaculture industry growing rapidly, fishmeal (FM) occupies an important position in aquatic animal nutrition as a traditional feed ingredient, but its production is facing rising costs and sustainability challenges, making the search for high‐quality heterologous proteins particularly essential.

Exploring the impact of culture media on life history characteristics of the house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae)

open access: yesScientific African
Insects, particularly house fly pupae (M. domestica L.), are increasingly promoted as a rich and sustainable protein source, presenting a practical solution for organic waste management. These insects possess the capability to transform animal waste into

A review and illustrated description of Musca Crassirostris, one of the most neglected livestock hematophageous flies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Tabanids, stomoxyine flies, hippoboscids and tsetse flies are the most well‐known brachyceran biting flies of livestock. Only a few other higher Diptera have developed the unique mouthparts required for blood feeding.

Advice on animal and public health risks of insects reared on former foodstuffs as raw material for animal feed

open access: yesFood Risk Assess Europe, Volume 4, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract In the coming decades, there is expected to be a sharply increased demand for dietary proteins for humans and animals. As a result, there is an increasing focus on reared insects as a new source of protein. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), the use of food chain residual flows such as former foodstuffs as

Prediction of mixture toxicity of essential oil constituents using nonparametric and parametric models against Musca domestica L.

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 81, Issue 12, Page 8595-8606, December 2025.
This study evaluated the predictive performance of mixture toxicity models for binary blends of essential oil constituents against Musca domestica. Parametric models (BRAID, Zimmer, MuSyC) outperformed conventional null models by accounting for synergistic or antagonistic interactions, highlighting the need for model selection based on interaction ...
