Regulatory architecture of cell identity genes and housekeeping genes
Trends in Cell Biology, 2023Gene regulation and chromosome architecture are intimately linked. Genes with prominent roles in cell identity are often regulated by clusters of enhancer elements. By contrast, a recent study shows housekeeping genes are often regulated through clustering of promoters. We discuss here new regulatory insights for these two types of genes.

Human housekeeping genes, revisited
Trends in Genetics, 2013Housekeeping genes are involved in basic cell maintenance and, therefore, are expected to maintain constant expression levels in all cells and conditions. Identification of these genes facilitates exposure of the underlying cellular infrastructure and increases understanding of various structural genomic features.

Adjuvant arthritis influences expression of housekeeping genes
Inflammation Research, 2011We determined whether adjuvant arthritis (AA) affects expression of three housekeeping (HK) genes, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-dehydrogenase (GAPDH), β-actin and 18s ribosomal RNA (18s rRNA) in organs of Sprague-Dawley rats using the real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).Expression of 18s rRNA was unaffected by AA whereas ...

On the nature of human housekeeping genes
Trends in Genetics, 2008Using a collection of expressed sequence tag (EST) data, we re-evaluated the correlation of tissue specificity with genomic structure, phyletic age, evolutionary rate and promoter architecture of human genes. We found that housekeeping genes are less compact and older than tissue-specific genes, and they evolve more slowly in terms of both coding and ...

ACBP – a PPAR and SREBP modulated housekeeping gene
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 2006The acyl-CoA binding protein (ACBP) is a 10 kD intracellular lipid binding protein that binds and transports acyl-CoA esters. The protein is expressed in most cell types at low levels; however, expression differs markedly between different cell types with expression being particularly high in e.g. cells with a high turnover of fatty acids. We show here

Housekeeping Genes as Internal Standards in Cancer Research
Molecular Diagnosis, 2004Differences in gene expression are frequently encountered in malignant tissues, and have been intensively studied as they can reflect different experimental or clinical conditions. Quantification of the often subtle changes in messenger RNA content is performed through comparison with the expression of endogenous controls.

Housekeeping Genes: A Gold Standard?
2004Gene expression studies that aim at precision require normalization to an internal control or “housekeeping” gene. The greatest challenge in choosing an appropriate housekeeping gene is maintaining expression consistency during treatment.

Gene Ontology based housekeeping gene selection for RNA-seq normalization
Methods, 2014RNA-seq analysis provides a powerful tool for revealing relationships between gene expression level and biological function of proteins. In order to identify differentially expressed genes among various RNA-seq datasets obtained from different experimental designs, an appropriate normalization method for calibrating multiple experimental datasets is ...
