Cortical evolution and human behaviour

Brain Research Bulletin, 2007
All mammals have complex behaviours but these are generally stereotyped in nature and lack the flexibility of human behaviour. Can the flexibility of human behaviour be understood as an evolutionary extension of previous behaviours or is it a departure? Theories pertaining to this question have a long history including, now refuted, theories on neoteny.

The cingulate gyrus and human behaviour

Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, 1973
Electrical stimuli to a limited region of the anterior cingulate gyrus in conscious human subjects elicited highly integrated types of motor behaviour. Stimulation was performed during stereo-EEG investigations by means of stereo-taxically implanted intracerebral electrodes. 52 patients of both sexes, ages 8–42, were selected for study.

Modern Humans and Human Behaviour

1995
In this chapter we shall explore two issues. First our sketch of hominid evolution must now be brought to a rapid conclusion with a brief description of the final stages which led to the emergence of our own species Homo sapiens sapiens. This brevity can be justified by the fact that our appearance during the last phases of the Pleistocene, a mere 100 ...

Human behaviour and the ethics of coercion

Medical Journal of Australia, 1988
There is an assumption that legislation against unhealthy behaviour would be unethical, or at best unenforceable and counterproductive. However, the ethics of coercion depend on the manner in which such coercion is introduced, the essential precondition being wide, favourable community consensus.

Weaning behaviour in human evolution

Seminars in Cell & Developmental Biology, 2010
Human life history incorporates early weaning, a prolonged period of post-weaning dependency and slow somatic growth, late onset of female reproduction, reduced birth spacing and a significant post-reproductive female lifespan, combined with rapid early brain growth.

Notes on human behavioural pharmacotoxicology

Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, 1988
1. After 30 years of psychopharmacological therapy we are able to identify some aspects which can be referred to a "collateral behavioural effect". The apparent rarity of this depends on the facility of confusing behavioural modifications (often sine materia), with patological ones (normally of a physical nature). 2.
