Correlates of human herpes virus‐8 and herpes simplex virus type 2 infections in Northern Cameroon

Journal of Medical Virology, 2004
AbstractThe association between sexual activity and human herpes virus‐8 (HHV‐8) infection has been established, but the mode of acquisition is still unclear. Blood samples from 238 individuals from Northern Cameroon were tested to evaluate the incidence of herpes simplex virus‐2 (HSV‐2), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Treponema pallidum, and HHV ...

INFECTION WITH HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS, HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS TYPE 2, AND HUMAN HERPES VIRUS 8 IN REMOTE VILLAGES OF SOUTHWESTERN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2005
To investigate the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted viruses, two serosurveys (the first in 1999 among 56 adults and the second in 2001 among 351 adults) were conducted in remote villages of the southwestern part of Papua New Guinea. Only one individual was positive for antibodies to HIV.

Human herpes virus 8: a new virus discloses its face

Virchows Archiv, 2000
The human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) or Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) is present in all Kaposi's sarcoma, and the detection of the virus using polymerase chain reaction or in situ hybridization is a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic test for the diagnosis of this neoplasm.

Seroprevalence of human herpes virus 8 in different Eritrean population groups

Journal of Clinical Virology, 1999
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma. In the US and Europe, HHV-8 is believed to be mainly sexually transmitted, but reports from some African countries suggest non-sexual transmission. To find out more about HHV-8 seroprevalence and transmission in Eastern Africa. In this study, 411 serum samples from different population ...

Clinical importance of human herpes virus-8 and human immunodeficiency virus infection in primary effusion lymphoma

Leukemia & Lymphoma, 2013
Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that usually develops in immunosuppressed patients infected with human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8) in conjunction with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. However, there are several reports of HHV-8-related HIV-negative cases and HHV-8-unrelated HIV-negative cases, mainly in ...

Human herpes virus 6 and human herpes virus 8 DNA sequences in brains of multiple sclerosis patients, normal adults and children

Journal of Neurology, 1997
In order to determine whether the newly discovered human herpesviruses (HHVs) are involved in multiple sclerosis (MS), we investigated by polymerase chain reaction the presence of specific deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences belonging to human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and to human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs),

Human Herpes Virus 8 in Skin Disease: An Immunoperoxidase Analysis

Journal of Histotechnology, 2005
AbstractHuman herpes virus 8 (HHV8) has been consistently implicated in the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and has been studied in a variety of skin lesions, principally by means of polymerase chain reaction. With this in mind, we sought to characterize a variety of skin lesions by means of paraffin immunoperoxidase studies using the antibody to

Control of Human Herpes Virus Type 8–Associated Diseases by NK Cells

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2007
Abstract:  The “natural killer” (NK) cells preferentially kill targets lacking surface major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC‐I) molecule expression. NK cells recognize these targets through membrane receptors, which can trigger activating or inhibitory signals for killing. Several tumors or virus‐infected cells downregulate MHC‐I expression as

Human herpes virus-8 associated with two cases of primary-effusion lymphoma

Annals of Hematology, 2000
Primary-effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which predominantly occurs in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and is characterized by the presence of a malignant effusion in one or more of the body cavities, generally in the absence of a primary tumor mass.

Absence of human herpes virus 8 in semen from healthy Danish donors

Human Reproduction, 1999
Epidemiological data indicate a sexual route of transmission of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) associated Kaposi's sarcoma. Recently human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) has been proposed as the aetiological agent for development of Kaposi's sarcoma. Further the virus has been reported in semen obtained from healthy men.
