Potential Application of the CRISPR/Cas9 System against Herpesvirus Infections. [PDF]
The CRISPR/Cas9 system has been applied in the genome editing and disruption of latent infections for herpesviruses such as the herpes simplex virus, Epstein⁻Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus.

Short communication: NKG2C+ NK cells contribute to increases in CD16+CD56- cells in HIV type 1+ individuals with high plasma viral load. [PDF]
Chronic HIV-1 infection results in the expansion of both NKG2C+ and CD16+CD56- human natural killer cells. NKG2C+ cells proliferate in response to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and expansion of the dysfunctional CD56-CD16+ natural killer (NK) cells is ...

The zebrafish xenograft platform-A novel tool for modeling KSHV-associated diseases [PDF]
Kaposi\u27s sarcoma associated-herpesvirus (KSHV, also known as human herpesvirus-8) is a gammaherpesvirus that establishes life-long infection in human B lymphocytes.

Human herpesvirus 1 meningoencephalitis after trigeminal neuralgia surgery
We report a case of human herpesvirus 1 (HHV-1) meningoencephalitis in a patient who underwent trigeminal neuralgia surgery. Although this surgery has been reported to increase the risk of mucocutaneous HHV-1 recurrence, to our knowledge, an association between trigeminal surgery and HHV-1 encephalitis has not been previously described.

Risk factors for high anti-HHV-8 antibody titers (≥1:51,200) in black, HIV-1 negative South African cancer patients: a case control study [PDF]
Background: Infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the necessary causal agent in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Infection with HIV-1, male gender and older age all increase risk for KS.

Analysis of the human herpesvirus-6 immediate-early 1 protein
Herpesvirus immediate-early (IE) gene products play key roles in establishing productive infections, regulating reactivation from latency and evading immune recognition. Analyses of HHV-6 IE gene expression have revealed that the IE1 gene of the HHV-6A and HHV-6B variants exhibits a higher degree of sequence variation than other regions of the genome ...

The activation of KSHV lytic cycle blocks autophagy in PEL cells [PDF]
This study confirms that autophagy is activated concomitantly with KSHV lytic cycle induction, and that autophagy inhibition by BECN1 knockdown reduces viral lytic gene expression.

Equine herpesvirus 1 bridles T lymphocytes to reach its target organs [PDF]
Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV1) replicates in the respiratory epithelium and disseminates through the body via a cell-associated viremia in leukocytes, despite the presence of neutralizing antibodies. "Hijacked" leukocytes, previously identified as monocytic

Human Herpesvirus 8 Reactivation and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 gp120
Abstract Context.—Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the presumed etiologic agent of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), the most common neoplasm in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Current evidence indicates HHV-8 is necessary, but not sufficient, for KS development without the involvement of other cofactors.

Seroprevalence of Human Herpesvirus-8 in HIV-1 Infected and Uninfected Individuals in Cameroon [PDF]
We evaluated the prevalence of HHV-8 antibodies in 516 plasma samples collected from HIV positive and negative patients from blood banks and urban areas of Cameroon. Among HIV-1 positive samples, HHV-8 seropositivity rate was 61% based on combined reactivity using both ELISA and IFA techniques.
