Felid Herpesvirus Type 1 Infection in Cats: A Natural Host Model for Alphaherpesvirus Pathogenesis

open access: yesISRN Veterinary Science, 2012
Feline herpesvirus 1 (FeHV-1) is an alphaherpesvirus that causes feline viral rhinotracheitis, an important viral disease of cats on a worldwide basis. Acute FeHV-1 infection is associated with both upper respiratory and ocular signs. Following the acute

The dysregulation of innate immunity by Porphyromonas gingivalis in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract The etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains under active debate. In this perspective, we explore the hypothesis that a primarily infection‐caused chronic dysregulation and weakening of human innate immunity via the underexpression, degradation, and inactivation of innate immune proteins necessary for direct antimicrobial effects and ...

Active herpesviruses are associated with intensive care unit (ICU) admission in patients pulmonary infection and alter the respiratory microbiome

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
BackgroundThe Herpesviridae family contains several human-related viruses, which are able to establish colonizing and latency in the human body, posing a significant threat to the prognosis of patients.

Herpesvirus Simplex Virus‐1 Exploits Inflammation to Infect Periodontal Stem Cells and Disrupt Lineage Commitment

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
HSV‐1 infects oral mesenchymal stem cells both in vitro and in vivo to dysregulate their lineage commitment. An inflamed gingival environment increases susceptibility to HSV‐1 infection, which further elevates proinflammatory cytokine levels and exacerbates alveolar bone loss.

The efficacy of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (green tea) in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease: an overview of pre-clinical studies and translational perspectives in clinical practice

open access: yesInfectious Agents and Cancer, 2017
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia characterized by cognitive and memory impairment. One of the mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of AD, is the oxidative stress being involved in AD‘s ...

The Role of Viruses in the Pathogenesis of Periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, EarlyView.
This narrative review aimed to summarize current evidence on the presence and potential pathogenic role of viruses in periodontitis. Design: Narrative Review; Population: Patients with periodontitis; Exposure: Detection of viruses in oral samples (biopsies, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, subgingival plaque, blood); Outcome: Viral prevalence, load ...

Immune involvement in neuropsychiatric disorders: Insights from single‐cell transcriptomic studies

open access: yesPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, EarlyView.
Neuropsychiatric disorders pose profound challenges to both research and treatment, largely due to their clinical heterogeneity and the limited understanding of their underlying biological mechanisms. While bulk RNA sequencing (bulk RNA‐seq) has been widely used to study gene expression, it cannot resolve cell‐type‐specific signals or detect rare ...

Use of bidirectional Mendelian randomization to unveil the association between antibody-mediated immune responses to infectious agents and allergic rhinitis

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is increasingly prevalent, yet diagnostic and therapeutic approaches remain inadequate. Recent studies show links between infectious diseases and noninfectious disorders, but the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown.
