Modeling the variability of shapes of a human placenta [PDF]
While it is well-understood what a normal human placenta should look like, a deviation from the norm can take many possible shapes. In this paper we propose a mechanism for this variability based on the change in the structure of the vascular ...

Pervasive polymorphic imprinted methylation in the human placenta
The maternal and paternal copies of the genome are both required for mammalian development, and this is primarily due to imprinted genes, those that are monoallelically expressed based on parent-of-origin.

Interleukin-33 in the human placenta [PDF]
Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is the newest member of the IL-1 cytokine family, a group of key regulators of inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether IL-33 is expressed in the human placenta and to investigate its expression in the context of acute and chronic chorioamnionitis.Placental tissues were obtained from five groups of ...

Bridging the Gaps between Microplastics and Human Health
Given the broad and intense use of plastic, society is being increasingly affected by its degradation and by-products, particularly by microplastics (MPs), fragments smaller than 5 mm in size, and nanoplastics (NPs), with sizes less than 1 µm.

Inhibition of Trophoblast-Induced Spiral Artery Remodeling Reduces Placental Perfusion in Rat Pregnancy. [PDF]
Rats harboring the human angiotensinogen and human renin genes develop preeclamptic features in pregnancy. The preeclamptic rats exhibit a deeper trophoblast invasion associated with a reduced resistance index by uterine Doppler.

Novel viral immune checkpoint K‐TM subunit is aberrantly expressed in CD8+ T cells and enriched in sera of cancer patients, inducing CD8+ T cell anergy and eliciting potent tumor immune escape in mouse model. Mechanistically, K‐TM directly targets and induces the phosphorylation of CD3ε receptor.

Zika virus productively infects primary human placenta-specific macrophages.
The strong association of Zika virus infection with congenital defects has led to questions of how a flavivirus is capable of crossing the placental barrier to reach the fetal brain.

Resistin Is Expressed in the Human Placenta [PDF]
The mechanism for decreased insulin sensitivity in pregnant women is not fully clarified. Resistin, a novel peptide hormone, is specifically expressed in the adipose tissue and decreases insulin sensitivity in rodents. In the present study, we demonstrate resistin gene expression in the human placental tissue, mainly in trophoblastic cells.

Injectable BMSC‐Based Extracellular Matrix‐Mimicking Microtissue for Myocardial Infarction Repair
A novel injectable biomimetic extracellular matrix scaffold (JLSV) is designed for enhanced delivery of bone marrow‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). By utilizing janus basic nanotubes, laminin, stromal‐derived factor‐1 alpha, and vascular endothelial growth factor, this innovative JLSV–BMSC microtissue shows promise in myocardial infarction ...
