Hungry bone syndrome after parathyroid surgery
Hemodialysis International, 2023AbstractIntroductionData on the incidence rates of hungry bone syndrome after parathyroidectomy in patients on dialysis are inconsistent, as the published rates vary from 15.8% to 92.9%.MethodsBetween 2009 and 2019, 120 hemodialysis patients underwent parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.

In the United States, the number of parathyroidectomies among patients with chronic dialysis has remained stable in the last decade. A fall in serum calcium concentration is common postparathyroidectomy in patients with hyperparathyroidism, which usually resolves in 2-4 days.

A Longstanding Hungry Bone Syndrome
The Endocrinologist, 2007Hungry bone syndrome is a common sequelae of parathyroid surgery. The phenomenon is caused by severe osteitis fibrosa cystica causing rapid remineralization of the bones. We describe a case of hungry bone syndrome with profound and longstanding hypocalcemia after parathyroid surgery that was very resistant to treatment.

Hyperparathyroidism and Hungry Bone Syndrome Revisited
Clinical Nuclear Medicine, 2014A 36-year-old woman presented with a calcium level of 15.7 mg/dL (normal, 8.5-11.0 mg/dL) and an extremely elevated parathyroid hormone level of 1549.6 pg/mL (normal, 10.0-65.0 pg/ mL). She subsequently underwent a parathyroid scan and ultrasound evaluation, which suggested parathyroid carcinoma.

Dynamic nomogram for predicting hungry bone syndrome before parathyroidectomy
Endocrine, 2023The objective of this study was to develop a dependable and uncomplicated prediction model utilizing clinical information readily accessible to patients before surgery. This model aimed to assess the likelihood of hungry bone syndrome occurrence in post-surgery patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), and to assist clinicians in adjusting ...

Scintigraphic findings in hungry bone syndrome following parathyroidectomy
Revista Española de Medicina Nuclear, 2010Prolonged hypocalcemia following parathyroidectomy, called hungry bone syndrome, is a common complication of parathyroid surgery seen in 13-30% of cases. In this article, we report the case of a 48-year-old woman with bone pain and multiple brown tumors as the first manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism due to a large parathyroid adenoma.

Hungry bone syndrome in a child following parathyroid surgery
Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1992The rare hungry bone syndrome was encountered in a 15-year-old child after the removal of a parathyroid adenoma. Contrary to the hypocalcemias caused by the removal of all parathyroid glands or transient ischemia after parathyroid surgery, in which the serum inorganic phosphorus level is usually normal, both serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus ...
