The paper examines Husserl’s (1859–1938) phenomenology and Hilbert’s (1862–1943) view of the foundations of mathematics against the backdrop of their lifelong friendship. After a brief account of the complementary nature of their early approaches, the paper focuses on Husserl’s Formale und transzendentale Logik (1929) viewed as a response to Hilbert’s “

We aim at clarifying to what extent the work of the German mathematician Ernst Schroder (1841–1902) on the algebra of logic is taken into consideration and rehashed in the work of the early Husserl, focusing on Husserl’s 1891 Review of the first volume of Schroder’s monumental Vorlesungen uber die Algebra der Logik (Exakte Logik) and on Husserl’s text ...

Husserl’s Rewriting of Empathy in Husserl
2014In all of Edmund Husserl’s published writings, “empathy” is a part of the superstructure of intersubjectivity (community), and in no case is it a primitive function at the foundation of intersubjectivity. Edith Stein’s use and mention of “empathy” are in effect passed over by Husserl even as he uses most of the underlying empathic distinctions.

My investigation into the nature of the modal concepts Husserl employs is motivated by the expectation that we may thereby be able to gain a deeper understanding of some of his crucial philosophical moves. The immediate stimulus for such an enquiry, however, was provided by Jaakko Hintikka’s book The Intentions of Intentionality in which he attempts an

We aim at clarifying to what extent the work of the English mathematician George Boole (1815–1864) on the algebra of logic is taken into consideration and discussed in the work of early Husserl, focusing in particular on Husserl’s lecture “Uber die neueren Forschungen zur deduktiven Logik” of 1895, in which an entire section is devoted to Boole.
