Fault current characterisation in VSC-based HVDC systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The DC-side line faults in high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) systems utilising voltage-source converters (VSCs) are a major concern for multi-terminal HVDC systems in which complete isolation of the faulted system is not a viable option.

Long‐Term Thermal Stability of Electron‐Beam‐Irradiation‐Crosslinked Polypropylene Films for Power Capacitors

open access: yesElectrical Materials and Applications, Volume 3, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
The polypropylene (PP) dielectric film undergoes severe degradation at high temperature. Electron‐beam irradiation crosslinking induces the formation of a compact spherulitic morphology in PP, which effectively restricts molecular‐chain mobility and hinders oxygen diffusion, thereby enhancing its long‐term thermal stability.

Optimizing the roles of unit and non-unit protection methods within DC microgrids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The characteristic behavior of physically compact, multiterminal dc networks under electrical fault conditions can produce demanding protection requirements.

Shielding of Unconventional High Surge Impedance Loading Transmission Lines

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper focuses on determining the optimal location and number of shield wires for a novel‐designed unconventional high surge impedance loading line. This line has a much lower surge impedance than conventional lines, raising key questions on the location of shield wires to meet an acceptable shielding failure rate (SFFOR).

Ferromagnetically Shielded Fault Current Limiter (FS‐FCL) Evaluation in Power Line

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This study introduces a new ferromagnetically shielded FS‐FCL design and its control strategy for limiting and interrupting fault currents. The fully shielded core structure enhances inductance and prevents saturation, enabling an immediate fault response without causing voltage drop during normal conditions.

Backup protection requirements in future low-inertia power systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The content of this paper will illustrate how, in the future, the power transmission system in Great Britain (GB) may be much "weaker" than it is at present, and will describe the potential impact that this could have on the voltage profiles during ...

Multi‐Layer MTDC Protection: Design and Simulation Assessment

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This study proposes a novel multi‐layer protection architecture for multi‐terminal DC systems that separates fault current‐limiting and interruption functions. By combining a thyristor‐based fault current limiter with an active resonance circuit breaker, the scheme significantly reduces peak fault currents and di/dt stress, enabling a more compact ...

Impact of VSC Converter Topology on Fault Characteristics in HVDC Transmission Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This work presents the outcome of a comprehensive study that assesses the transient behaviour of two high voltage direct current (HVDC) networks with similar structures but using different converter topologies, termed two-level and half-bridge (HB ...

Research on Coordinated Control Strategies for Low‐Frequency Networking in Large‐Scale Offshore Wind Farms

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper addresses challenges in large‐scale offshore wind power integration by proposing a coordinated control strategy for low‐frequency networking using the modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C), enabling stable multi‐terminal and multi‐farm connections.
