Hybrid vigour in plant breeding

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B - Biological Sciences, 1955
Abstract Hybrid vigour is of interest to the plant breeder because of its beneficial effects on the yield and quality of domestic plants. These benefits may be produced in various ways. Müntzing (1954) finds that the superior yield of F1 hybrids of tetetraploid rye is the result of small increases in several components of yield; for ...

Hybridity, polyploidy and change in breeding system in a Ruellia hybrid

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1969
Ruellia tweediana and R. tuberosa are large flowered chasmogamous diploids (n=17) with normal meiosis and fertility. F 1 hybrids, successful in only one direction (R. tweediana x R. tuberosa), are vegetatively vigorous and possess 17 often heteromorphic bivalents with high degree of segregational irregularities.

Hybrid Breeding in Wheat

2015
Despite promising superior performance, hybrid wheat currently occupies only a niche sector in commercial wheat production. However, with the recent development of practicable hybrid seed production systems, a switch from line to hybrid breeding in wheat seems realistic.

Somatic hybridization as a tool for tomato breeding

Euphytica, 1994
Protoplast fusion can be used to produce somatic hybrids of species that cannot be obtained by sexual hybridization. The possibility to introgress genes from Solanum species into the cultivated tomato species Lycopersicon esculentum, and to obtain novel cytoplasm-nucleus combinations (cybrids) was considered as an important strategy to extend the ...

The use of hybridization in breeding of eukaryotic microorganisms

Russian Journal of Genetics, 2006
The article deals with the genetic bases of breeding of eukaryotic microorganisms. Using the data on the Saccharomyces yeasts, application of different genetic approaches and methods to breeding is discussed, including interstrain, interlinear, and distant interspecific hybridization, as well as heterosis, polyploidy, cytoduction, and meiotic ...

Breeding swarms

Proceedings of the 7th annual conference on Genetic and evolutionary computation, 2005
In this paper we propose a novel hybrid (GA/PSO) algorithm, Breeding Swarms, combining the strengths of particle swarm optimization with genetic algorithms. The hybrid algorithm combines the standard velocity and position update rules of PSOs with the ideas of selection, crossover and mutation from GAs.

Breeding of Hybrid Rapeseed

1998
Increasing demand predominantly of vegetable oil, but also of protein for utilization in both food as well as industrial uses leads to the conclusion that there is a general need to improve productivity of rapeseed. This implies an increase in rapeseed yield per area unit (kg/ha).

Breeding for Hybrid Hot Pepper

Journal of New Seeds, 2004
Summary Hot pepper is an important vegetable crop of tropics and subtropics regions of the world. The pungency, red color, and oleoresin contents important characters in the crop. There are different types of hot pepper available in the market depending upon the market needs and consumer preference. The genic and cytoplasmic male sterility is available
