Vortex combustion in a hybrid rocket motor

open access: yes, 2016
The work is focused on a vortex flow pancake hybrid rocket motor (VFP). This hybrid rocket configuration is characterized by two flat solid fuel disks and a tangential injection between them. The gap between the two flat disks serves as combustion chamber.

Design Trade-offs for Hybrid Rocket Motors

open access: yes48th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2012
A new method is developed for preliminary design of hybrid rocket motors. A cooperative evolutionary method is used with an indirect approach to perform the coupled optimization of hybrid rocket motor and trajectory for a sounding rocket. Different propellant combinations are considered for a sounding rocket application (microgravity platform).

Design and Testing of a Hybrid Rocket Motor

47th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2011
This research aims to provide a methodology for the project of labscale hybrid motors. This development begun with the thermal analysis of the fuel grain using the Flynn, Wall and Ozawa method; this provided the simulation entry data to maximize the motor performance.

Peregrine Hybrid Rocket Motor Development

50th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, 2014
To further develop and demonstrate the applicability of liquefying-fuel hybrid rocket technology to low-cost launch applications, a small team of engineers is developing a medium-scale liquefying-fuel hybrid sounding rocket using storable propellants (paraffin wax and N2O) that will propel a 5 kg payload to the edge of space.

Hybrid rocket motor fuel studies

33rd Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 1997
Results from four fuel characterization studies are reported. The first study was a premix (complete fuel except for curative) hold time determination which concluded that a full-scale 600-gal premix could be held for at least 3 weeks without any harmful degradation of the cured final fuel.

Advanced hybrid rocket motor experiments

Acta Astronautica, 1987
Abstract Results of experiments performed with an advanced, automated measuring system and dealing with combusion of polymethylmethacrylate and polyethylene with oxygen and different mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen are reported. Factors affecting the regression rate of the fuel are the mass flux, the geometry, the pressure level and the presence of ...

Testing and CFD Simulation of Diaphragm Hybrid Rocket Motors

47th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2011
Combustion efficiency in standard hybrid rocket motors is usually low. This is due to the poor mixing of the core oxidizer flow with the gasi fied fuel from the walls. Motor scale increase usually worsens this issue. Large and volu metric inefficient post combustion chambers are common devices used to improve efficiency, while mixers are somewhat more ...

Optimal Design of Hybrid Rocket Motors for Microgravity Platform

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2008
A nested direct/indirect method is used to find the optimal design for a microgravity platform which is based on a hybrid sounding rocket. The direct optimization of the parameters that affect the motor design is coupled with the indirect trajectory optimization to maximize a given mission performance index.

An analytical and experimental study of a hybrid rocket motor

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2014
The hybrid rocket motor is a kind of chemical propulsion system that has been recently given serious attention by various industries and research centers. The relative simplicity, safety and low cost of this motor, in comparison with other chemical propulsion motors, are the most important reasons for such interest.

Size scale-up in hybrid rocket motors

34th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 1996
Computational fluid dynamic analyses of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with solid-phase pyrolysis, gas-phase combustion, turbulence and radiation are performed to study hybrid rocket combustor flowfields. The computational study is closely coordinated with a companion experimental program using a planar slab burner configuration with HTPB as fuel ...
