Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry for Quantifying Membrane Fouling: Fouling Layer Structure and Chemical Interaction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (Nano SIMS) is established as a powerful analytical tool to visualize and quantify the membrane fouling layers. ABSTRACT Membrane technology has garnered considerable attention for applications in wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Nevertheless, membrane fouling remains a major barrier, yet the lack of

Quels scénarios de débordement de l'Ourthe (Belgique) en réponse à une variabilité climatique long terme ?

open access: yesPhysio-Géo, 2019
This paper proposes an approach of climate change impacts assessment on overflow of an Ourthe river reach (Belgium). We based our work on a set of hydro-climatic scenarios including the long-term climate variability (from the Maunder Minimum to the end ...

The hydraulic and hydrological performance of large wood accumulation in a low-order forest stream

open access: yes, 2010
Large wood and its accumulations are poorly understood despite being an important feature in the functioning of forested river channels and floodplains.

Synchronization‐Dissipation in the Cardiorespiratory System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By modeling central nervous coupling and viscoelastic interactions in the cardiorespiratory system we show that synchronization produces a 10% gain in cardiac efficiency in humans. It is surmised that respiratory sinus arrhythmia improves cardiac pumping efficiency by reducing dynamic stress and power dissipation in the pulmonary vasculature.

Advanced Multiscale Modeling for Revealing Anomalous Fluid Transport Induced by Confinement Interfacial Layer Reconstruction in Sub‐10 nm Space

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Integrating experimental insights with molecular dynamics simulations, we establish an advanced mathematical model for fluids confined in sub‐10‐nm channels, enabling quantitative prediction of interfacial layer thickness and viscosity by accounting for channel material, temperature, and fluid properties.

Optimising training data for ANNs with Genetic Algorithms [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2006
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have proved to be good modelling tools in hydrology for rainfall-runoff modelling and hydraulic flow modelling. Representative datasets are necessary for the training phase in which the ANN learns the model's input ...

HYDROLOGICAL AND STABILITY MODELLING OF INITIAL LANDSLIDES TRIGGERING DEBRIS FLOWS IN ASH-FALL DEPOSITS COVERING HILLSLOPES SURROUNDING SOMMA-VESUVIUS (SOUTHERN ITALY).

open access: yes, 2010
Rainfall-induced debris flows involving ash-fall pyroclastic deposits covering steep mountain slopes that surround the Somma-Vesuvius volcano, are natural events representing the main cause of risk for urban settlements located at footslopes.

Cobalt Single‐Atom Catalysts for Ultrafast Sulfamethoxazole Degradation: Unveiling the Chloride‐Ion‐Enhanced Formation of Co(IV)=O

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An atomically dispersed Co–N4 single‐atom catalyst rapidly activates peroxymonosulfate to remove the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole from water. Common ions have little impact, but chloride dramatically speeds degradation by promoting a high‐valent Co(IV) = O oxidant via in situ HOCl–catalyst electron transfer.

Critical overflow of the main combined sewer in the city of Lviv: A case study of recent extreme flooding

open access: yesCase Studies in Chemical and Environmental Engineering
The city of Lviv in Ukraine has a combined sewer system where the main sewer function is performed by the Poltva River, shaped in the underground concrete channel.
