Performance decay of stern bearing based on lubrication numerical model and state parameters

open access: yesZhongguo Jianchuan Yanjiu, 2022
ObjectiveThis paper puts forward a method for monitoring and evaluating the lubrication performance of a marine stern tube bearing which combines a lubrication performance decay model and support vector machine (SVM) algorithm.

Accelerated Stokesian Dynamics simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A new implementation of the conventional Stokesian Dynamics (SD) algorithm, called accelerated Stokesian Dynamics (ASD), is presented. The equations governing the motion of N particles suspended in a viscous fluid at low particle Reynolds number are ...

Multimodal Locomotion in Insect‐Inspired Microrobots: A Review of Strategies for Aerial, Surface, Aquatic, and Interfacial Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review identifies key design considerations for insect‐inspired microrobots capable of multimodal locomotion. To draw inspiration, biological and robotic strategies for moving in air, on water surfaces, and underwater are examined, along with approaches for crossing the air–water interface.

Hydrodynamic interactions of spherical particles in suspensions confined between two planar walls

open access: yes, 2005
Hydrodynamic interactions in a suspension of spherical particles confined between two parallel planar walls are studied under creeping-flow conditions.

Suspensions of prolate spheroids in Stokes flow. Part 3. Hydrodynamic transport properties of crystalline dispersions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
The short-time limit of the hydrodynamic transport properties is calculated for crystalline dispersions of parallel prolate spheroids using a moment expansion technique similar in concept to the simulation method known as Stokesian dynamics.

A Shear Thickening Colloidal Suspension Functioning via Progressive Impact Jamming with Persistent Lubrication Layer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An ionic liquid‐based shear‐thickening fluid (ILSTF) exhibits lubricated dynamics from strong shear thickening to impact‐triggered jamming. A persistent nanometric solvation layer around silica governs both the shear thickening saturation in rheology and jamming front propagation under dynamic impact compression.

The Role of Lubrication Mechanisms in the Knee Synovial Joints

open access: yesمجلة النهرين للعلوم الهندسية, 2008
Synovial joints form the most important feature of the human body as they represent the centers of the most essential and basic activity in the human beings, which is motion.

Effects of Surface Chemical Properties on the Frictional Properties of Self-Assembled Monolayers Lubricated with Oleic Acid

open access: yesTribology Online, 2012
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexadecanethiol (HDT) and 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHDA) were used to vary the surface chemical properties, and oleic acid (OA) was used as a lubricant. A pin-on-disk tribometer equipped with Fourier transform IR (

Fully coupled simulations of non-colloidal monodisperse sheared suspensions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this work we investigate numerically the dynamics of sheared suspensions in the limit of vanishingly small fluid and particle inertia. The numerical model we used is able to handle the multi-body hydrodynamic interactions between thousands of ...

Evaporation‐Driven Solutal Marangoni Control of Rayleigh–Taylor Instability in Inverted Films

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inverted liquid films, like paint on a ceiling, are inherently unstable under gravity. This work shows that selective evaporation in volatile binary mixtures generates solutal Marangoni stresses that either suppress or amplify the Rayleigh Taylor instability.
