Rational Fine‐Tuning of MOF Pore Metrics: Enhanced SO2 Capture and Sensing with Optimal Multi‐Site Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A pore tuning strategy to amplify the multi‐site MOF‐SO2 interactions is proposed to achieve an enhanced trace SO2 capture and chemiresistive sensing in highly stable isostructural DMOFs by annelating benzene rings. This work provides a facile strategy to achieve tailor‐made stable MOF materials for specific multifunctional applications.

The impact of hydrogen on decarbonisation and resilience in integrated energy systems

open access: yesAdvances in Applied Energy
The lack of clarity and uncertainty about hydrogen's role, demand, applications, and economics has been a barrier to the development of the hydrogen economy.

CXC chemokine ligand 12 protects pancreatic β-cells from necrosis through Akt kinase-mediated modulation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 activity. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The diabetes prevention paradigm envisages the application of strategies that support the maintenance of appropriate β-cell numbers. Herein we show that overexpression of CXC chemokine ligand12 (CXCL12) considerably improves the viability of isolated rat

Galaxy Clustering at z~3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Galaxies at very high redshift (z~3 or greater) are now accessible to wholesale observation, making possible for the first time a robust statistical assessment of their spatial distribution at lookback times approaching ~90% of the age of the Universe ...

Near‐Infrared Emitting Lanthanide Catecholate Giant Single Crystals – Morphology Control and Photon Down‐Conversion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlled syntheses of lanthanide coordination polymers based on the dihydroxybenzoquinone (DHBQ) organic linker afforded large single crystals of Ln‐DHBQ CPs (Ln = Yb, Nd). A novel structural variant of Yb‐DHBQ is identified by means of single crystal diffraction analysis.

Photocatalytic Versus Stoichiometric Hydrogen Generation Using Mesoporous Silicon Catalysts: The Complex Role of Sacrificial Reagents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study highlights the importance of accounting for stoichiometric hydrogen produced when utilizing Si photocatalysts. The stoichiometric contribution is sacrificial reagent dependent and decreases with increasing sterics around the catalyst surface.

Dark matter and stable bound states of primordial black holes

open access: yes, 2003
We present three reasons for the formation of gravitational bound states of primordial black holes, called holeums,in the early universe.Using Newtonian gravity and nonrelativistic quantum mechanics we find a purely quantum mechanical mass-dependant ...

Transparent Inorganic–Organic Bilayer Neural Electrode Array and Integration to Miniscope System for In Vivo Calcium Imaging and Electrophysiology

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents the BioCLEAR system, a highly transparent and conductive neural electrode array composed of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and doped PEDOT:PSS, enabling neural recordings with minimal optical artifacts. When integrated with a GRIN lens, this cost‐effective neural implant allows simultaneous electrophysiological recording and GCaMP6‐based ...

Innovation in the energy sector: advancing or frustrating climate policy goals? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The energy sector is well known for the relatively modest level of resource that it devotes to research and development (R&D). However, the incremental pace of energy innovation has speeded up in the last decade as measured by public sector R&D budgets ...
