Upgrading of hydrogenerator excitation systems
2000 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering. Conference Proceedings. Navigating to a New Era (Cat. No.00TH8492), 2002Whereas hydroelectric stations are continuing to deliver low-cost energy, in some cases after 75 years' service, certain peripherals of the generation units become obsolete after thirty years. Excitation systems in particular have required partial or total replacement, to provide: more stringent voltage regulation, enhanced stability of the sytems ...

Tests of a vacuum gauge for an HTS hydrogenerator
Proceedings of 14th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference EPE-PEMC 2010, 2010The paper describes the methodology, test rig and results of vacuum gauge tests under rotational conditions. The gauge is dedicated to measurements of vacuum in the rotor of an HTS power generator. The tests were performed using a dedicated test rig where the data of the measurements were transmitted using a Bluetooth device.

Combination of Numerical and Analytical Methods for Hydrogenerator Calculation
2020 International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM), 2020The design of large hydro-generators is a multi-disciplinary optimization task, comprising electromagnetic, mechanical as well as cooling issues, which often lead to contradictory requirements. The often used analytical algorithms are based on simplifications and abstractions, so they have to be combined with numerical methods to refine the calculation ...

Solution to Increase the Hydrogenerator Mean Power
Waterpower '99, 1999The paper aims to find a new solution for the power hydrogenerators (66 MVA) cooling, in the view of the increase of the power in the power system. This solution proposes the use of thermal tubes when accomplishing the cooler. By applying this method there is aimed the increase of the operating current of the hydrogenerators from 2420 A, (66 % of the ...

Overview of hydrogenerator stator winding monitoring
IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference. IEMDC'99. Proceedings (Cat. No.99EX272), 2003Stator winding failure due to insulation system deterioration is an important cause of hydrogenerator forced outages. Furthermore, if the deterioration is not found at an early stage, premature stator rewinding may be required, at a cost that far exceeds the cost of many maintenance procedures, such as rewedging and cleaning.

The Ventilation Condition of Larger Hydrogenerators

Optimal PID Gain Schedule for Hydrogenerators-Design and Application
IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1989The development and testing of a digital gain switching governor for hydrogenerators are described. Optimal gains are found at different load points by minimizing a quadratic performance criterion prior to controller operation. During operation, the gain sets are switched in depending on gate position and speed error magnitude.

Damping of System Oscillations with a Hydrogenerating Unit
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1967Stabilization of the initial interconnection across Utah and Arizona between the Northwest and Southwest power systems has been aided by damping torques generated through special control of a unit in Grand Coulee powerplant in Washington. The special control is derived from local frequency, using the phase advance of the first derivative to offset the ...

Fire Detection in Open-Type Hydrogenerators
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1970The tests made by the Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd. to determine the optimum automatic fire-detection system for the open ventilation-type generators at its Chute-a-Caron plant are described. Several detection systems were studied, resulting in smoke detection and fixed-temperature detection systems being tested.

A graphical approach to hydrogenerator governor tuning
IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 1990A graphical approach to hydrogenerator governor tuning is described. A graph which is developed can be used to predict optimum proportional and integral gains based on four parameters: the time constants of the water column and of the rotor inertia, and the self-regulation constants of the turbine and of the loading grid.
