Hemp Cultivation and Crop Diversification: Implications for Ecosystem Services in Kentucky

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ecosystem benefits of expanding hemp cultivation by assessing its impact on crop diversity. Using scenario‐based simulations and fixed‐effect panel regressions with county‐level data in Kentucky, we find that increased hemp acreage tends to enhance crop diversity, improving water quality and bird diversity.

Quantifying Streamflow Variations in Ungauged Lake Basins by Integrating Remote Sensing and Water Balance Modelling: A Case Study of the Erdos Larus relictus National Nature Reserve, China

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
Hydrological predictions in ungauged lakes are one of the most important issues in hydrological sciences. The habitat of the Relict Gull (Larus relictus) in the Erdos Larus relictus National Nature Reserve (ELRNNR) has been seriously endangered by lake ...

The Cow or the Credit: Causal Relationship Between California Dairy Herd Consolidation and Anaerobic Digesters

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The California dairy industry has experienced considerable consolidation over the past 30 years. During this period, there has also been substantial technological innovation, implementation of the state's Low Carbon Fuel Standard program, and rapid adoption of anaerobic digesters.

When the River Runs Low: Heterogeneous Impacts of Transportation Disruptions on Local Grain Basis

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A substantial share of U.S. soybean and corn exports from the Midwest moves by barge along the Mississippi River system to export terminals in the Louisiana Gulf. Transportation costs between Midwestern grain elevators and export terminals create a wedge between prices at these locations, and shocks to these costs are partially passed on to ...

Runoff Variation of Zhuanglang River and Its Ecological Effect under Influence of Human Activities

open access: yesRenmin Zhujiang
To explore the influence of human activities on the runoff ecosystem in the Zhuanglang River, the runoff changes in the Zhuanglang River and its runoff ecosystem from 1970 to 2020 were studied using the ecological runoff index based on the flow duration ...

Evaluation of instream ecological flow with consideration of ecological responses to hydrological variations in the downstream Hongshui River Basin, China

open access: yes, 2021
Due to increasing anthropogenic activities, especially with cascade reservoirs having been constructed, the hydrological regimes of the Hongshui River (HSR) Basin which were mainly shaped by precipitation in the undisturbed period, have inevitably ...

Uncovering renewable energy policy impact channels on land values, the local farm structure, and farmland heterogeneity

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Germany's Renewable Energy Sources Act (REA), enacted in 2000 and subsequently amended, subsidized national renewable energy production with fixed feed‐in tariffs for renewable energy sources (RE) from wind, solar, and biogas. Empirical studies suggest that the policy was creating windfall effects for landowners and attribute farmland use ...

A micro-perspective on variation and universals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper approaches the questions raised in the workshop description surrounding universals and variation from the perspective of microvariation. Throughout this document we frequently refer to van Craenenbroeck and van Koppen (2016) (henceforth VCVK),

Causal analysis of trade loss from pathogens: A global study of foot and mouth disease impacts on meat exports

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Our general interest is in global trade loss from livestock pathogens, specifically exports. We adopt a causal inference approach that considers animal disease outbreaks over time as non‐staggered binary treatments with the potential for switching in (infection) and out of treatment (recovery) within the sample period. The outcome evolution of
