Hydromechanical stimulation of bioluminescent plankton

Luminescence, 2002
AbstractThe response of the bioluminescent dinoflagellate Pyrocystis fusiformis was investigated for different hydraulic conditions (‘hydromechanical stimulation’). Pipe flow and oscillating shear produced luminescence, whereas changes in hydrostatic pressure were not stimulating.

Hydromechanical research

Physics Today, 1965
Hydromechanics research projects considered of importance to the Navy are conducted annually by nongovernment laboratories under a financial support program maintained by the Bureau of Ships. The middle of March is the next deadline for submitting proposals for the program, which is technically administered by the David Taylor Model Basin.

Hydromechanical simulation of systemic circulation

Medical & Biological Engineering, 1974
A hydromechanical model is developed for the simulation of the arterial systemic circulation. The geometry and elastic properties of arteries, the pulse-rate and stroke volume of the left ventricle, the design of peripheral resistances and the viscosity of the model fluid are approximated to physiological conditions.

A Hydromechanical Transmission Development

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1967
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes the results of the first step of a planned development program to produce a family of split path hydro-mechanical transmissions for military applications. The HMT-250 hydromechanical transmission has given superior performance, unlimited ability to change ratio without affecting service life ...

Hydromechanical triggering of landslides

2012
Water infiltrating during intense rainfall on steep slopes gradually weakens the wet soil mass, inducing localized failures that may initiate a cascade of load redistributions and successive failures propagating across a hillslope. The challenge of linking the progressive nature of local events culminating in an abrupt landslide is addressed by a new ...

Hydromechanics of Tidal Jets

Journal of the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division, 1982
A unified theoretical investigation of the fully-developed region of a tidal jet is presented. The jet is treated as a vertically-averaged flow and the effects of lateral mixing, bottom friction, and variable bathymetry are included. It is shown, without assuming any specific form of the similarity function, that the cross-stream length scale and the ...
