Hydrometrocolpos—Diagnostic and Therapeutic Dilemmas

Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, 2008
Congenital distal vaginal obstruction is a rare condition, usually asymptomatic until menarche, thus often diagnosed only during puberty. Hydrometrocolpos is caused by such an obstruction, only when reasonable amounts of fluid are secreted from the mucosal lining of the genital tract.

Hydrometrocolpos and polydactyly

Urology, 1980
Two cases of hydrometrocolpos and polydactyly in female infants with persistent urogenital sinus are reported. The importance of considering hydrometrocolpos as the cause of an abdominal mass in female infants with polydactyly is stressed. Cytologic examination of the vaginal fluid may help in early diagnosis.

Neonatal Hydrometrocolpos

European Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1989
A neonate with persistence of the urogenital sinus, double vaginae and hydrometrocolpos, in association with an anterior perineal anus, ambiguous genitalia and a ventricular septal defect, is described. Abdominal ultrasound led to an early diagnosis which prevented morbidity and mortality from renal failure and unnecessary laparotomy.

The infant has remained well for more than a year following treatment. A simple technique for rapid diagnosis permits safe and appropriate management of this potentially serious ...
