A Case of Hydrometrocolpos and Polydactyly

open access: yesClinical Medicine Insights Pediatrics, 2015
Neonatal hydrometrocolpos (HMC) is a rare Mullerian duct anomaly with an incidence of 0.006%. It occurs due to blockage of the vagina with accumulation of mucus secretions proximal to the obstacle. These secretions are secondary to intrauterine and postnatal stimulation of uterine and cervical glands by maternal estrogens.

Sonographic detection of neonatal hydrometrocolpos.

open access: yesBritish Journal of Radiology, 1992
Hydrometrocolpos is the result of an obstruction of the genital tract by an intact hymen, a midplane transverse septum, cloacal anomalies or vaginal atresia. This obstruction allows an accumulation of secretions from the infant cervical mucous glands in the vagina and uterus stimulated by maternal oestrogen (Wilson et al, 1978; Nyberg, 1990).
