The effect of NOM characteristics and membrane type on microfiltration performance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Efforts to understand and predict the role of different organic fractions in the fouling of low-pressure membranes are presented. Preliminary experiments with an experimental apparatus that incorporates automatic backwashing and filtration over several ...

Collapse transitions of a periodic hydrophilic hydrophobic chain

open access: yes, 1998
We study a single self avoiding hydrophilic hydrophobic polymer chain, through Monte Carlo lattice simulations. The affinity of monomer $i$ for water is characterized by a (scalar) charge $\lambda_{i}$, and the monomer-water interaction is short-ranged ...

Water Adsorption on Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Surfaces of Silicon

open access: yes, 2018
The isotherm thickness and hydrogen-bonding interactions of water layers adsorbed on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were quantified and compared.

Tailoring the Properties of Functional Materials With N‐Oxides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The properties of materials bearing N‐oxide groups are often dominated by the polar N+─O− bond. It provides hydrophilicity, selective ion‐binding, electric conductivity, or antifouling properties. Many of the underlying mechanisms have only recently been discovered, and the interest in N‐oxide materials is rapidly growing.

Biporous Metal-Organic Framework with Tunable CO2/CH4 Separation Performance Facilitated by Intrinsic Flexibility. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this work, we report the synthesis of SION-8, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) based on Ca(II) and a tetracarboxylate ligand TBAPy4- endowed with two chemically distinct types of pores characterized by their hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties.

Peptide Sequencing With Single Acid Resolution Using a Sub‐Nanometer Diameter Pore

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
To sequence a single molecule of Aβ1−42–sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the aggregate is forced through a sub‐nanopore 0.4 nm in diameter spanning a 4.0 nm thick membrane. The figure is a visual molecular dynamics (VMD) snapshot depicting the translocation of Aβ1−42–SDS through the pore; only the peptide, the SDS, the Na+ (yellow/green) and Cl− (cyan ...

Cationized Lignocelluloses as Scavengers for Anionic Surfactants. II. Hydrophobic Interactions

open access: yesAdsorption Science & Technology, 2004
As reported in Part I of this study, anionic surfactants are rapidly adsorbed and strongly retained on cationized lignocellulosic materials as a result of ionic interactions.

Hydrodynamics of the Developing Region in Hydrophobic Microchannels: A Dissipative Particle Dynamics Study

open access: yes, 2012
Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) is becoming a popular particle based method to study flow through microchannels due to the ease with which the presence of biological cells or DNA chains can be modeled.

Multifunctional Microstructured Surfaces by Microcontact Printing of Reactive Microgels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Reactive poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) microgels are used as functional inks to create surface‐grafted arrays on glass via microcontact printing. The patterns (10–50 µm widths and spacings) enable stable binding and post‐functionalization with dyes and peptides.

TGA and TPD MS study of silica-gelatin materials

open access: yesХімія, фізика та технологія поверхні, 2016
Gelatin-based films with silica-to-gelatin weight ratio 1:5 or 8:5, containing either hydrophilic or hydrophilic-hydrophobic silica, have been prepared and studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis and temperature-programmed desorption mass ...
