Interactions between a Polystyrene Particle and Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Surfaces in Aqueous Solutions

open access: yesLangmuir, 2008
The interaction between a colloidal polystyrene particle mounted on an AFM cantilever and a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic surface in aqueous solution is investigated. Despite the apparent simplicity of these two types of systems a variety of different types of interactions are observed.

Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Solid-Fluid Interaction

ACM Transactions on Graphics, 2022
We propose a novel solid-fluid coupling method to capture the subtle hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions between liquid, solid, and air at their multi-phase junctions. The key component of our approach is a Lagrangian model that tackles the coupling, evolution, and equilibrium of dynamic contact lines evolving on the interface between surface ...

Water Interactions with Hydrophobic versus Hydrophilic Nanosilica

Langmuir, 2018
It is well-known that interaction of hydrophobic powders with water is weak, and upon mixing, they typically form separated phases. Preparation of hydrophobic nanosilica AM1 with a relatively large content of bound water with no formation of separated phases was the aim of this study.

Water interaction with hydrophobic and hydrophilic soot particles

Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2008
The interaction of water with laboratory soots possessing a range of properties relevant for atmospheric studies is examined by two complementary methods: gravimetrical measurement of water uptake coupled with chemical composition and porosity analysis and HTDMA (humidified tandem differential mobility analyzer) inference of water uptake accompanied by

Phenomenological Model of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Interactions

Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, 2017
Hydration forces acting between macroscopic bodies at distances L ≤ 3 nm in pure water are calculated based on the phenomenological model of polar liquids. It is shown that depending on the properties of the bodies, the interacting surfaces polarize the liquid differently, and wetting properties of the surfaces are completely characterized by two ...

Tuning of the Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Interactions in 2D Chiral Domains

The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2012
The molecular arrangement in the Langmuir monolayers is determined by the interplay of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions between the components. Herein, the competition between the interactions of the components of the organic dye:phospholipid HSP:DMPA mixed monolayer has been studied.

Microbiological Interaction and Diffusion Properties of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic PU Membranes

Journal of Biomaterials Applications, 2002
In this study, the diffusion characteristics of Diclofenac-Na through hydrophobic and hydrophilic polyurethane (PU) based membranes areinvestigated. Hydrophilic polymers are obtained via graft copolymerization of PU with acrylic acid (AA) and crotonic acid (CA).

Interaction Forces between Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Self-Assembled Monolayers

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2000
An investigation is presented of the interaction of charged self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with a monoprotic ionizable acid functional group (-COOH) and uncharged SAMs with a methyl terminated functional group (-CH(3)). The strength of the interactions are determined using an atomic force microscope.

Temperature-favoured assembly of collagen is driven by hydrophilic not hydrophobic interactions

Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, 1995
It has become almost axiomatic that protein folding and assembly are dominated by the hydrophobic effect. The contributions from this, and other, hydrophilic interactions can now be better distinguished by direct measurement of forces between proteins.

Quantum Mechanics Study on Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Interactions in the Trivaline–Water System

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2018
With the aim to elucidate hydrophobic effects in the unfolded state of peptides, DFT-M062X computations on the Val3H+· nH2O ( n up to 22) clusters have been accomplished. As far as the main chain is concerned, four conformers with β-strand and/or polyproline type II conformations, PPII (indicated as β-β, β-PPII, PPII-β, and PPII-PPII), have been found ...
