Allopurinol and oxypurinol are hydroxyl radical scavengers [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1987
Allopurinol is a scavenger of the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (k2 approx. 109 M−1s−1). One product of attack of hydroxyl radical upon allopurinol is oxypurinol, which is a major metabolite of allopurinol.

Hydroxyl-Radical Footprinting

Cold Spring Harbor Protocols, 2007
INTRODUCTIONThe hydroxyl-radical footprinting methodology has wide applications to studying protein-DNA interactions, as well as structural perturbations (e.g., bending) that occur in DNA during protein binding. Hydroxyl radicals cleave DNA by abstracting a hydrogen atom from C4 of the sugar in the minor groove.

Superoxide-dependent formation of hydroxyl radicals: Detection of hydroxyl radicals by the hydroxylation of aromatic compounds

Analytical Biochemistry, 1981
Abstract A mixture of xanthine or hypoxanthine and xanthine oxidase generates the superoxide radical, O2 • , and H2O2. In the presence of iron salts, O2 • and H2O2 can interact to produce the hydroxyl radical, OH·. Superoxide-dependent formation of OH· can be measured by its ability to hydroxylate salicylate as followed by an improved ...

The Benzylperoxyl Radical as a Source of Hydroxyl and Phenyl Radicals

Chemistry – A European Journal, 2014
AbstractThe benzyl radical (1) is a key intermediate in the combustion and tropospheric oxidation of toluene. Because of its relevance, the reaction of 1 with molecular oxygen was investigated by matrix‐isolation IR and EPR spectroscopy as well as computational methods.

An hydroxyl radical infrared laser

Chemical Physics Letters, 1971
When mixts. of O3 and mol. H2 were flashed in a laser cavity, stimulated ir emission at 3050-3410 cm-1 was detected, and the radiation was identified as the P1 transitions of the v = 3 -> 2, 2 -> 1, and 1 -> 0 fundamentals of the OH radical. Stimulated emission was obsd. with flash energies of 400-2000 J, for O3/H2 mixts.

Scavenging of hydroxyl radical by catecholamines

Luminescence, 2012
ABSTRACTThe direct effects of the four catecholamines (CATs), adrenaline (A), noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (D) and isoproterenol (I), on free radicals were investigated using the free radical 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) and hydroxyl radial (HO•).

An optical hydroxyl radical sensor

Biosensors and Bioelectronics, 1993
A hydroxyl radical (.OH) fibre-optic sensor has been developed. An .OH radical-sensitive reagent phase (nitrophenol) was immobilized onto XAD-7 methacrylate beads. Subsequently the beads were attached to the distal end of a polymethylmethacrylate fibre optic.

The Reaction of Acetylene with Hydroxyl Radicals

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2005
The potential energy surface for the reaction between OH and acetylene has been calculated using the RQCISD(T) method and extrapolated to the complete basis-set limit. Rate coefficients were determined for a wide range of temperatures and pressures, based on this surface and the solution of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional master equations. With

Optimizing electron spin resonance detection of hydroxyl radical in water

open access: yesChemosphere, 2003
The parameters affecting the electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of hydroxyl free radical in water are studied and optimized. The hydroxyl radical is generated by the Fenton reaction with iron (II) ammonium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide reacting in a
