Substantial formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is inevitable in aerobic life forms. Due to their extremely high reactivity and short lifetime, hydroxyl radicals are a special case, because cells have not developed enzymes to detoxify these most ...

Comparative study of adenosine 3′‐pyrophosphokinase domains of MuF polymorphic toxins
With the ultimate goal of understanding the association of toxin‐immunity modules to temperate phages, we characterized toxins from three prophages and examined cross‐protection from immunity proteins. The toxins exhibit adenosine 3′‐pyrophosphokinase activity and are toxic in Escherichia coli.

Mitochondria contain two mitoribosome rescue factors, ICT1 and MTRFR (C12orf65). ICT1 also functions as a mitoribosomal protein in mice and humans, and its loss is lethal. Although Mtrfr knockout mice could not be generated, knockout zebrafish lines for ict1 and mtrfr were established.

Comparative Evaluation of the Radical-Scavenging Activities of Fucoxanthin and Its Stereoisomers
Fucoxanthin (Fuco) is a characteristic carotenoid of brown seaweeds. In the present study, Fuco and its stereoisomers 9'Z-Fuco, 13Z- and 13'Z-Fuco were extracted from Laminaria japonica Aresch.

Diffusive vs. non-diffusive paths to interstellar hydrogen peroxide. A machine learning-based molecular dynamics study [PDF]
Context. Radical chemical reactions on cosmic dust grains play a crucial role in forming various chemical species. Among different radicals, the hydroxyl (OH) is one of the most important ones, with a rather specific chemistry. Aims. The goal of this work is to simulate the recombination dynamics of hydroxyl radicals and the subsequent formation of ...

The K+‐Cl− cotransporters (KCCs) facilitate the symport of ions across the plasma membrane. They participate in physiological processes including neuronal regulation. Here, we characterized KCCs from Drosophila and Hydra vulgaris. Comparative analyses of transporters provide insights into the mechanism of KCC ion transport, regulation, and evolution ...

Effects of Conical Intersections on Hyperfine Quenching of Hydroxyl OH in collision with an ultracold Sr atom [PDF]
The effect of conical intersections (CIs) on electronic relaxation, transitions from excited states to ground states, is well studied, but their influence on hyperfine quenching in a reactant molecule is not known. Here, we report on ultracold collision dynamics of the hydroxyl free-radical OH with Sr atoms leading to quenching of OH hyperfine states ...
