The natural setup for our work here is a metric space (G, mG) where G is a subdomain of \(\mathbb {R}^n\,, n\ge 2\). For our studies, the distance mG(x, y), x, y ∈ G is required to take into account both how close the points x, y are to each other and the position of the points relative to the boundary ∂G.

Metrics of Hyperbolic Type on Bounded Fractals

The author studies the three different metrics of hyperbolic type on bounded fractals with Dirichlet boundary condition. All these metrics are closely related to each other and can be used to derive Harnack inequalities, estimate Green's functions and to study the local behaviour and energy of harmonic functions.

The upper half-space \(H\) supports the hyperbolic metric \(\lambda_H (z) |dz|\), where \(\lambda_H (z) =1/Im z\), and if \(f\) is any conformal map of \(H\) onto a domain \(D\), then the hyperbolic metric on \(D\) is \(\lambda_D (z) |dz|\), where \(\lambda_D (f(z)) |f'(z)|=\lambda_H (z)\).
