New views of some invariants associated with the Cartesian 2D velocity gradient tensor

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Vorticity and divergence of horizontal flow are fundamental quantities in meteorology; both are linear functions of the four elements of the 2D velocity gradient tensor and both are formally unchanged under coordinate rotation. We explore four quadratic functions of the elements that are geometrically invariant in this sense, finding some novel ...

Climate Vulnerability and Renewable Energy Consumption: The Moderating Role of Financial Development

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the nexus between climate vulnerability (CVUL) and renewable energy consumption (RECO) and tests the moderating effect of financial development (FD) on this relationship. The analysis is, particularly, relevant for the 162 panel countries observed between 1995 and 2022, which face diverse climate risks and exhibit ...

Numerical modeling of site response at large strains with simplified nonlinear models: Application to Lotung seismic array

open access: yesOpen Geosciences
Site response analyses at large strains are routinely carried out neglecting the shear strength of soil and the stiffness degradation due to the increase in pore pressures, leading to unrealistic predictions of the seismic response of soil deposits.

Creep Characteristics of Reconstituted Silty Clay under Different Pre-Loading Path Histories

open access: yesBuildings
Due to the long-term deformation settlement of foundations, issues such as damage and functional failure of buildings and structures have long been a concern in the engineering field.

Energy Consumption Analysis of Frozen Sandy Soil and an Improved Double Yield Surface Elastoplastic Model considering the Particle Breakage

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2019
The stress-strain relationship of frozen soil is a hot research topic in the field of frozen soil mechanics. In order to study the effect of particle crushing on the stress-strain relationship, a series of triaxial compression tests for frozen sandy soil

Shear‐Responsive Red Blood Cell Carriers for Targeted Drug Delivery to Constricted Arteries

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Red blood cells are harnessed as mechanoresponsive carriers that exploit the elevated shear stress of stenotic arteries to transiently open membrane pores and release encapsulated therapeutics selectively at sites of arterial narrowing. By coupling vascular hemodynamics with RBC membrane mechanics, a hemodynamically activated platform for localized ...

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Perceptions of Parenting Beliefs and Practices in Fathers of Adolescents

open access: yesFamily Relations, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective We examined how fathers' identity beliefs relate to their parenting behaviors during their children's adolescence. Background Although identity theory has been used to understand parental roles, fathers' identity beliefs and parenting behaviors during adolescence remain understudied.

Axial and Biaxial Fatigue Behavior of 6061‐T651 Cold Metal Transfer Welded Joints

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Lightweight aluminum structures in transportation systems are increasingly exposed to complex service loading, yet the fatigue performance of welded joints is still predominantly assessed using uniaxial data. In this work, the axial and biaxial fatigue behavior of 6061‐T651 aluminum alloy joints produced by cold metal transfer (CMT) welding is

Thermal Buckling Analysis of Laminated Composite Plates Using Four-Variable Refined Plate Theory

open access: yesJournal of Engineering
This paper investigates the thermal buckling of laminated composite plates based on a refined plate theory that incorporates four variables, using hyperbolic and polynomial shear strain functions for the first time to analyze thermal buckling of a ...
