Endogenous Ethanol Production in the Human Alimentary Tract: A Literature Review

open access: yesJournal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Volume 40, Issue 4, Page 783-790, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Endogenous ethanol production, or auto‐brewery syndrome (ABS), is a rare condition of the human alimentary canal that results in intoxication without alcohol consumption. Despite its clinical significance, ABS remains largely undiagnosed because of a lack of awareness among clinicians.

Children With Fragile X Syndrome Display a Switch Towards Fast Fibres in Their Recruitment Strategy During Gait

open access: yesJournal of Intellectual Disability Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder caused by the lack of FMRP, a crucial protein for brain development and function. FMR1 mutations are categorized into premutation and full mutation (FXSFull), with somatic mosaicism (FXSMos) modulating the FXS phenotype.

Redefining Clinical Trials on Regenerative Therapies to Target Responsiveness in Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis Treatment

open access: yesJournal of Oral Rehabilitation, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ‐OA) presents a significant clinical challenge, marked by limited therapeutic options and variable patient responses. While regenerative therapies show promising results, conventional clinical trial methodologies often fail to demonstrate a significant clinical difference, largely due to ...

Psychophysical changes after total sleep deprivation and experimental muscle pain

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, Volume 34, Issue 2, April 2025.
Summary Sleep disturbances exacerbate chronic pain, increase psychological load, and increase inflammation. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) mimics aspects of chronic pain, predominantly affecting peripheral pain mechanisms, while experimental sleep provocations have been shown to impact central pain mechanisms.

Methodological Quality and Content of Guidelines on Early Childhood Allergy Prevention: A Systematic Assessment and Content Analysis

open access: yesMaternal &Child Nutrition, Volume 21, Issue 2, April 2025.
Clinical Practice Guidelines and Food‐Based Dietary Guidelines differ in methodological quality, but their recommendations on Early Childhood Allergy Prevention are fairly consistent. However, low transparency in guideline development can still lead to reduced trust in the guideline, low implementation and insufficient adherence to the recommendations.

Neuropsychiatric Manifestations in Breath‐Hold Divers and the Folklore of Tomokazuki

open access: yesNeurology and Clinical Neuroscience, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Diving can affect neuropsychiatric functions. Previous studies of Taravana syndrome in Polynesian pearl divers, which have similarities to decompression illness following breath‐hold diving, and of Chiyamai in Japanese breath‐hold divers, which have symptoms like panic disorder, show what modern medicine can learn from the wisdom of tradition.

Enteric neuropathy and the vagus nerve: Therapeutic implications

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, EarlyView.
Abstract Enteric neuropathies are characterized by abnormalities of gut innervation, which includes the enteric nervous system, inducing severe gut dysmotility among other dysfunctions. Most of the gastrointestinal tract is innervated by the vagus nerve, the efferent branches of which have close interconnections with the enteric nervous system and ...

Genomic stress in diseases stemming from defects in the second brain

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, EarlyView.
The enteric nervous system, a.k.a., second brain, is subject to a range of genotoxic exposures that include intrinsic oxidative stress and extrinsic agents associated with ingested foods, inflammation, and dysbiosis. Resulting DNA damage, if left unrepaired, can induce cell dysfunction or death, resulting in gut abnormalities and enteric neuropathy ...

Evidence‐based review and frontiers of migraine therapy

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, Volume 37, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Background Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is identified as one of the “episodic syndromes that may be associated with migraine,” along with benign paroxysmal torticollis, benign paroxysmal vertigo, and abdominal migraine. It has been proposed that CVS and migraine may share pathophysiologic mechanisms of hypothalamic activation and altered ...
