Modulation of the host Th1 immune response in pigeon protozoal encephalitis caused by Sarcocystis calchasi [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Pigeon protozoal encephalitis (PPE) is an emerging central-nervous disease of domestic pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica) reported in Germany and the United States.

Discovery of an Adaptive Neuroimmune Response Driving Itch and Fast Tick Removal with Implications for Preventing Pathogen Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Doehl et al. discovered an adaptive neuroimmune mechanism that induces itch in tick‐exposed guinea pigs, enabling rapid tick removal. This itch‐induced tick removal (IITR) is mediated by an adaptive cellular immune response and is independent of IgG, IgE, or TRPV1.

Overcoming PEG Antigenicity: Statistical PEG Isomers Reduce Antibody Binding

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Conventional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is commonly applied in biomedicine, but is now known to induce antibody formation. Here, it is shown that the development of “randomized PEG” (rPEG) featuring glycidyl methyl ether (GME) comonomers decreased antibody binding.

The phenotypically quantitative nature of hypersensitivity of European plum (Prunus domestica L.) against the Plum pox virus and its description using the hypersensitivity index

open access: yesHorticultural Science, 2008
More than 1,300 seedlings of European plum originating from crossing combinations with at least one parent showing hypersensitivity resistance against PPV were analyzed for their reaction to artificial inoculation with PPV using the double grafting ...

Self‐Assembled Myricetin‐Arginine Conjugate Nanozymes for Targeted Suppression of Joint Inflammation and Osteoclastogenesis in Rheumatoid Arthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Carrier‐free myricetin‐arginine conjugate nanozymes (MANZs) have been fabricated through a Mannich reaction and spontaneous self‐assembly. MANZs selectively accumulate in inflamed joints by targeting M1 macrophages via CAT2‐mediated uptake. The nanozymes can effectively modulate macrophage polarization, suppress osteoclast differentiation, and mitigate

Wearable Thermoelectric Generators for In Vivo Modulation of Insulin Release

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a wearable, self‐powered thermoelectric system (IGNITE) that sustainably harvests body heat to electrically stimulate engineered human cells for insulin release. Operating autonomously without batteries, IGNITE achieves glycemic control in diabetic mice, demonstrating a significant advance in bioelectronic medicine and setting the ...

Erythema nodosum as azathioprine hypersensitivity reaction in a patient with bullous pemphigoid

open access: yesIndian Journal of Dermatology, 2013
A 65-year-old woman with bullous pemphigoid presented with fever and several red-purple nodular subcutaneous lesions on both lower legs 1 week after starting treatment with azathioprine (AZA). Biopsy of a skin nodule was compatible with erythema nodosum (
