Cerebral edema: Hypertonic saline solutions
Current Treatment Options in Neurology, 1999Our experience, and that of others, suggests that hypertonic saline solution therapy reduces intracranial pressure and lateral displacement of the brain in patients with cerebral edema. This therapy appears most promising in patients who have head trauma or postoperative cerebral edema.

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1963Modifications of flow and composition of bile have been studied in the guinea pig with ligated ureters after injection of hypertonic solutions of two nonmetabolizable substances, mannitol and xylose (1.66 m), into the jugular vein. A distinct and persistent decrease in biliary flow always occurs.

Microvascular Research, 1976Abstract The microvessel beds of the cheek pouch and cremaster muscle of the golden hamster were exposed to hypertonic solutions between 312 and 372 mosm/liter. In the cremaster, arteriolar dilations were induced at osmolarities of 332 mosm/liter and greater.

Hypertonic solutions for termination of pregnancy
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1968Experience with the use of hypertonic solutions for the termination of 17 pregnancies has been reported. A success rate approaching 90 per cent with the use of hypertonic saline was encountered. No ill effects were seen. The precautionary measures believed to be necessary to eliminate risks have been stressed.
