Hypoalbuminemia, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, and functional outcome in intracerebral hemorrhage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
PURPOSE: Hypoalbuminemia and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) are reported in critically-ill patients, but their relationship is unclear. We sought to determine the association of admission serum albumin and SIRS with outcomes in patients ...

Preoperative Total Iron‐Binding Capacity Is a Novel Surrogate Marker of Short‐ and Long‐Term Outcomes After Liver Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
HCC patients with low preoperative TIBC levels experienced significantly more frequent post‐hepatectomy complications. Furthermore, these patients were significantly correlated with worse survival. Preoperative serum TIBC levels may be a novel surrogate marker of postoperative complications and long‐term survival after hepatectomy.

Sex‐Based Body Composition Changes in Patients With Rectal Cancer Undergoing Preoperative Chemoradiotherapy: A Prospective Observational Study

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This prospective study observed that preoperative chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer was associated with reductions in body fat and grip strength, which appeared to be more pronounced in female patients. These findings suggest that sex‐sensitive nutritional and exercise support may be beneficial to help maintain muscle mass and physical function ...
