Fluorescence Quenching-Based Mechanism for Determination of Hypochlorite by Coumarin-Derived Sensors

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2019
A fluorescence quenching-based mechanism for the determination of hypochlorite was proposed based on spectroscopic and chromatographic studies on the hypochlorite-sensing potency of three structurally similar and highly fluorescent coumarins. The mode of

Mechanistic Insights Into Proton and Oxygen Transport Through Ultrathin Amorphous Al2O3 and Al2O3‐SiO2 Electrocatalyst Overlayers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Ultrathin amorphous alumina electrocatalyst overlayers block oxygen reduction while cathodic‐driven structural relaxation accelerates proton transport over time. By contrast, ultrathin aluminosilicate coatings allow proton permeation but cannot suppress oxygen.

Oxidized LDL bind to nonproteoglycan components of smooth muscle extracellular matrices

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2001
Arterial wall lipid retention is believed to be due primarily to ionic interactions between lipoproteins and proteoglycans. Thus, oxidized low density lipoproteins (LDL), with decreased positive charge relative to native LDL, should have decreased ...

Octocrylene: From Sunscreens to the Degradation Pathway during Chlorination Processes: Formation of Byproducts and Their Ecotoxicity Assessment

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
Octocrylene is an organic sunscreen whose main action is to absorb UVB radiation and short UVA wavelengths; it is used in various cosmetic products in order to provide an adequate sun-protection factor or to protect the cosmetic formulations themselves ...

Direct Seawater Electrolysis with Stabilized High‐Performance NiCr Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
An assembly combining a highly active NiFe layered double hydroxyde electrocatalyst and a NiCr foam anode shows high corrosion resistance during alkaline seawater electrolysis (ASE), minimal Cr leaching in the electrolyte, and long‐term efficiency. An electrolyzer comprising the so‐prepared anode and a cathode derivatized with NiMoO4 achieves overall ...

Efficacy of chemical disinfectants for the containment of the salamander chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The recently emerged chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) causes European salamander declines. Proper hygiene protocols including disinfection procedures are crucial to prevent disease transmission.

Long‐Term Study of Optical Nanoparticles Doped With Yb3+/Er3+ and Transition Metal Ions and their Real Application for Imaging and Temperature Sensing on Triticum Aestivum L.

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows a study on SrF2:Yb3+, Er3+ water colloid, additionally doped with transition metals (Sc3+ or Zn2+) to enhance observed emission, tested during 22 weeks of storage in ambient conditions. Due to high stability, excellent optical properties achieved under 975 nm excitation, and negligible phytotoxicity, the nanoparticles are applied for ...

Use of Pyrogallol Red and Pyranine as Probes to Evaluate Antioxidant Capacities towards Hypochlorite

open access: yesMolecules, 2013
Hypochlorite is a strong oxidant able to induce deleterious effects in biological systems. The goal of this work was to investigate the use of PGR and PYR as probes in assays aimed at evaluating antioxidant activities towards hypochorite and apply it to ...

Hosts and Commensal Bacteria Synergistically Antagonize Opportunistic Pathogens at the Single‐Cell Resolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In the tripartite‐species model, Drosophila larvae stimulate lactate production through excreting digestion enzymes. S. marcescens population senses a cue of lactate and tends to diverge into virulent and reduced virulence subclusters with remarkable heterogeneity to metabolize carbon metabolism and counter colonization resistance, giving a fitness ...
