ABSTRACT Migratory fish species have experienced substantial declines throughout aquatic habitats, but actions to manage and conserve migratory species require a better understanding of the relative contributions of local populations to the metapopulation.

Influence of Oscillating Flow on Hyporheic Zone Development [PDF]
The hyporheic zone is an ecologically important ecotone that describes the extent to which nutrient‐rich surface waters penetrate the shallow subsurface adjacent to a flowing surface water body. Although steady‐state models satisfactorily explain the incursion of surface water into the subsurface as a function of head gradients developed across ...

In‐channel wood, a critical component of forested rivers, has the capacity to enhance hyporheic flow. This process facilitates the continuous exchange of gases, solutes, and nutrients across the sediment‐water interface, regulating pollutant transport ...

Advances in Response Mechanisms and Identification Methods of Spatiotemporal Variations in Hyporheic Exchange in Rivers [PDF]
[Objective] This study aims to reveal the influence mechanisms of hydrothermal conditions on the spatiotemporal variability of hyporheic exchange and to develop more reliable estimation methods.

ABSTRACT The ecology of forests, their losses, and terrestrial wood decomposition dynamics have been intensively studied and reviewed. In the aquatic realm, reviews have concentrated on large wood (LW) in rivers and the transition from freshwater to marine environments in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, a comprehensive global synthesis

Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

Experimental study of bedform-driven hyporheic exchange
In order to test the bedform impacts on the hyporheic exchange behavior, the tracer Na Cl is used to test the hyporheic exchanges under four groups of bedforms in a water-circling flume.

Here, we tested for cryptic diversity within freshwater mussels in north‐western Australia and identified multiple undescribed lineages. Distributional patterns were complex with some taxa displaying evidence of potentially recent long‐distance dispersal whereas others were more restricted in their distributions.

In-stream and hyporheic water quality of the River Esk, North Yorkshire: implications for Freshwater Pearl Mussel habitats [PDF]
River systems and their catchments are important for ecological, social and economic reasons. However, the increased and changing usage of these natural environments and resources for anthropogenic benefit have led to degradation in water quality, which ...
