Advancement in the hyporheic exchange in rivers
Surface-subsurface exchange (hyporheic exchange) across the river bed plays an important role in the fate of solutes and contaminants in rivers. The main mechanisms of hyporheic exchange include pumping exchange and turnover exchange. The pumping exchange is driven by pore water flows induced by head gradients.

Seasonal variation in cascade‐driven hyporheic exchange, northern Honduras
AbstractA characterization of hyporheic exchange for dry and wet season baseflow, as well as partially dewatered discharge, was done in Prieta Creek, a first‐order cascade in northern Honduras. The cascade had discharges from 1 to 15 l s−1, had average slopes of 12%, pool spacing of 3 m, and shallow substrate of sand and gravel.

RIVERBED MORPHOLOGY, HYDRODYNAMICS AND HYPORHEIC EXCHANGE PROCESSES
Hyporheic exchange is key to buffer water quality and temperatures in streams and rivers, while also providing localized downwelling and upwelling microhabitats. In this research, the effect of geomorphological parameters on hyporheic exchange has been assessed from a physical standpoint: surface and subsurface flow fields, pressure distribution across

Hyporheic Exchange in a Meandering Pool‐Riffle Stream
Water Resources Research, 2022AbstractInteractions among stream characteristics, hyporheic exchange (HE), and groundwater flow are a crucial control for physicochemical and biological reactions in hyporheic zone (HZ). Many previous studies solely investigated the HE induced by pool‐riffle bedforms or meanders but few research studied the interactions between them despite this pair ...

Hyporheic Exchange in a Straight Stream With Alternate Bars
Water Resources Research, 2022AbstractHyporheic exchange (HE) is essential to riverine ecosystem, water quality, and energy cycling in a stream due to its governing role in physicochemical and biological processes in hyporheic zone (HZ). Alternate bars, characterized by a repetitive sequence of diagonal bars with a pool‐riffle bedform, are common geomorphic features that generally ...

Applicability of the Transient Storage Model to the hyporheic exchange of metals
Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, 2006Stream-subsurface exchange results from a complex ensemble of transport mechanisms that require different modeling approaches. Field and laboratory experiments show that advective exchange through the underlying sediments is an important mechanism of solutes transport and storage in riverine systems.

Effects of bed geometric characteristics on hyporheic exchange
Journal of Hydro-environment Research, 2022As an active ecotone between the surface stream and groundwater, hyporheic zone (HZ) plays a crucial role in hydrological and ecological processes. Previous numerical simulation and experimental studies have shown that hyporheic exchange can be affected not only by current but also by geometric characteristics of the streambed.

Hyporheic exchange and streambed filtration of suspended particles
Water Resources Research, 2012Fine particles are necessary for watershed biogeochemical cycling and stream metabolic processes but pose a risk to water quality if present in excess or if carrying sorbed contaminants. Despite having low settling velocities, these particles can leave suspension during downstream transport by a series of processes such as hyporheic filtration ...

How Does Subsurface Characterization Affect Simulations of Hyporheic Exchange?
Groundwater, 2012We investigated the role of increasingly well‐constrained geologic structures in the subsurface (i.e., subsurface architecture) in predicting streambed flux and hyporheic residence time distribution (RTD) for a headwater stream. Five subsurface realizations with increasingly resolved lithological boundaries were simulated in which ...

Lateral and Longitudinal Variation of Hyporheic Exchange in a Piedmont Stream Pool
Environmental Science & Technology, 2007A conservative solute tracer experiment was conducted in Indian Creek, a small urban stream in Philadelphia, PA, to investigate the role of subsurface properties on the exchange between streamwater and the hyporheic zone (subsurface surrounding the stream).
