Variability of hyporheic exchange in an experimental gravel bed

Geophysical Research Abstracts, 2011
A series of tracer experiments in a large outdoor flume were conducted to examine the variability of hyporheic exchange in gravel bed sediments. An 18 m long section of a 2 m wide flume was filled with a 30 cm thick gravel layer with a porosity of 0.39.

Effect of streamflow stochasticity on bedform-driven hyporheic exchange

Advances in Water Resources, 2010
Abstract The interactions between the stream and the geomorphologic units that compose the stream channel result in an exchange of water, heat, and chemicals that is an important component of the flows of energy and nutrients in the river ecosystem.

Integrated modeling to quantify transport and fate of nano-plastics in the hyporheic zone under the influence of hyporheic exchange

Environmental Pollution
Nano-plastics (NPs) present significant environmental risks due to their small size, high reactivity, and mobility, yet their migration behavior in hyporheic zones remains poorly understood. Previous models predominantly employed one-dimensional NPs permeation in porous media that neglected critical multi-physics processes including hyporheic exchange ...

Hyporheic exchange processes in a coastal headwater stream

2011
Hyporheic exchange flow involves the two-way movement of water between the stream channel and the bed and banks. These exchange flows create distinctive habitats and influence biogeochemical processes and water temperatures. This study focused on the characterization of the spatial distribution of subsurface flow pathways and associated travel times ...

Hyporheic exchange along a river below a Dam

2012
Hyporheic exchange is an important mechanism for solute mixing between river waters and shallow groundwater in streambed sediment. The hyporheic zone also provides an important ecotone for benthic species, including macro-invertebrates, microorganisms, and parts of some fish life stages. Most hyporheic analyses are limited in scope and performed at the

Effect of Mid‐Channel Bar Geometry on Hyporheic Exchange

River Research and Applications
ABSTRACT Hyporheic exchange has been shown to provide essential ecosystem functions such as biogeochemical opportunities for nutrient processing. Hyporheic exchange flux (HEF) and residence time (RT) in the hyporheic zone are highly influenced by the size of instream morphological structures ranging from ripples ...
