Inter‐disciplinary perspectives on processes in the hyporheic zone
Ecohydrology, 2010AbstractThe interface between groundwater and surface water within riverine/riparian ecosystems—the hyporheic zone (HZ)—is experiencing a rapid growth of research interest from a range of scientific disciplines, often with different perspectives. The majority of the multi‐disciplinary research aims to elucidate HZ process dynamics and their importance ...

MTBE, TBA, and TAME Attenuation in Diverse Hyporheic Zones
Groundwater, 2009Groundwater contamination by fuel‐related compounds such as the fuel oxygenates methyl tert ‐butyl ether (MTBE), tert ‐butyl alcohol (TBA), and tert ‐amyl methyl ether (TAME) presents a significant issue to ...

Multi‐offset GPR methods for hyporheic zone investigations
Near Surface Geophysics, 2008ABSTRACTPorosity of stream sediments has a direct effect on hyporheic exchange patterns and rates. Improved estimates of porosity heterogeneity will yield enhanced simulation of hyporheic exchange processes. Ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) velocity measurements are strongly controlled by water content thus accurate measures of GPR velocity in saturated ...

Imaging hyporheic zone solute transport using electrical resistivity
Hydrological Processes, 2010AbstractTraditional characterization of hyporheic processes relies upon modelling observed in‐stream and subsurface breakthrough curves to estimate hyporheic zone size and infer exchange rates. Solute data integrate upstream behaviour and lack spatial coverage, limiting our ability to accurately quantify spatially heterogeneous exchange dynamics. Here,

A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE HYPORHEIC ZONE FLUIDIZATION
Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego, 2018In the hyporheic zone, exchange of surface water and groundwater takes place. During the groundwater drainage and the increase in hydraulic gradient, this zone can be fluidized. The paper presents a mathematical model of hyporheic zone fluidization. It has been obtained from a balance of forces related to the water filtration through the hyporheic zone.

Ecotonal and other properties of the Hyporheic Zone
Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 2010Distinct boundaries, where biological and physicochemical environments change abruptly, occur in nature and, at least superficially, riverbanks appear to separate terrestrial from aquatic systems. However, at depth, catchment groundwater is linked to channel water via the hyporheic zone.

Perspectives on Defining and Delineating Hyporheic Zones
Journal of the North American Benthological Society, 1993The term "hyporheic zone" is gaining wide usage among those interested in processes and patterns within the stream bed and floodplain sediments. Because of differences in terminologies, methodologies, and dogma among biologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, and chemists, there is no single, conceptual definition of the hyporheic zone.
