Evaluation of hyporheic zone residence time distribution

2016
Hyporheic zone (HZ) is the interstitial space immediately below or adjacent to a stream at which there is an active exchange of stream and groundwater. It is the ecotone between stream and shallow groundwater ecosystems, providing unique and important ecological, hydrological and biogeochemical functions.

Experimentation in the Hyporheic Zone: Challenges and Prospectus

Journal of the North American Benthological Society, 1993
Increased experimentation is essential if we are to understand the biotically rich hyporheic zone and how it influences processes in other parts of lotic systems. Unique challenges face experimenters because the hyporheic zone is both extremely complex hydrologically and relatively inaccessible and difficult to manipulate.

Microplastic mobility into hyporheic zone: preliminary laboratory experiments.

2022
In recent years, an increasing amount of sampling of fluvial sediment has been carried out to identify microplastics. However, very little is known about the ability of microplastics to infiltrate into the hyporheic zone. Here we show an experimental activity to investigate the influence of hyporheic exchange on microplastic fate in aquatic ...
