Collared Peccary Wallows are Hubs of Animal Activity and Diversity in a Central American Wet Forest. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Collared peccary wallows are used by a diverse assemblage of vertebrates in a Central American tropical wet forest. Wallows had significantly higher vertebrate activity and diversity compared to surrounding forest. Wallow visitors included 13 amphibian, 2 reptile, 11 bird, and 16 mammal species, engaged in behaviors including reproduction, drinking ...

Ancient DNA preserved in small bone fragments from the P.W. Lund collection

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 5, Page 2064-2071, March 2021., 2021
The Lund collection is one of the oldest fossil collections in the world, but it is not known whether the poorly preserved small mammal bones that constitute the majority of the collection are suitable for ancient DNA analysis. We genetically identify 17 species, representing 11 mammals, two birds, one fish, and three frogs from small fragmentary bones

One or More Species of Pacific Tree Frogs? Insights From Vocal Sexual Signals. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We investigated patterns of geographic variation in mating calls and how they relate to genetic and environmental distances among nine populations of Pacific tree frogs. We show that variation in the mating calls is better explained by mitochondrial lineage than by geographic or environmental distances among populations.

Animal Venom Pharmacological Resources: Exploiting Bioactive Peptides to Target Multi-Drug-Resistant Bacteria. [PDF]

open access: yesBiochem Res Int
Background The escalating rise of multi–drug‐resistant (MDR) bacterial strains significantly threatens global health, creating a “silent pandemic” prompted by natural selection, gene mutation, and horizontal gene transfer. This crisis is worsened by the deficit in the development of new treatments, necessitating the innovative discovery of new potent ...

Environmental and morphological constraints interact to drive the evolution of communication signals in frogs

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 33, Issue 12, Page 1749-1757, December 2020., 2020
Frog species that call from the water do it at lower frequencies than nonaquatic frogs. We argue that environmental constraints on body size and vocal sound production interact to drive call frequency evolution in frogs. Abstract Animals show a rich diversity of signals and displays.

Different processes shape the patterns of divergence in the nuclear and chloroplast genomes of a relict tree species in East Asia

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 10, Page 4331-4342, May 2020., 2020
We infer that different markers reflecting divergent processes may owe to the heredity and ploidy difference of genomes, while divergent extent of significant patterns in northern and southern regions may owe to different population history between regions.
