Inverse modeling of fire emissions constrained by smoke plume transport using HYSPLIT dispersion model and geostationary satellite observations [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2020
Abstract. Smoke forecasts have been challenged by high uncertainty in fire emission estimates. We develop an inverse modeling system, the HYSPLIT-based Emissions Inverse Modeling System for wildfires (or HEIMS-fire), that estimates wildfire emissions from the transport and dispersion of smoke plumes as measured by satellite observations.

A Coupled Wildfire-Emission and Dispersion Framework for Probabilistic PM2.5 Estimation

open access: yesFire, 2023
Accurate representation of fire emissions and smoke transport is crucial for current and future wildfire-smoke projections. We present a flexible modeling framework for emissions sourced from the First Street Foundation Wildfire Model (FSF-WFM) to ...

Determining sources of reactive mercury compounds in Reno, Nevada, United States

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Chemistry, 2023
There is much uncertainty regarding the sources of reactive mercury (RM) compounds and atmospheric chemistry driving their formation. This work focused on assessing the chemistry and potential sources of reactive mercury measured in Reno, Nevada, United ...

WRF-HYSPLIT model results.

open access: yes, 2017
Surface concentration of 131I at 0 UTC, 5 November 2011 modeled with the HYSPLIT model [10] using the WRF meteorological data. The locations of Prague and Budapest are marked. Northward transport was caused by higher level winds.

Configuring the HYSPLIT Model for National Weather Service Forecast Office and Spaceflight Meteorology Group Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
For expedience in delivering dispersion guidance in the diversity of operational situations, National Weather Service Melbourne (MLB) and Spaceflight Meteorology Group (SMG) are becoming increasingly reliant on the PC-based version of the HYSPLIT model ...

WHITE DUST SIMULATION FOR TAILINGS POND OF ERDENET COPPER MINING USING HYSPLIT

open access: yesProceedings of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, 2018
The purpose of this research was to identify dispersion and transporting of white dust for tailings pond of Erdenet copper mining in Mongolia. Spring and autumn have a significantly higher level of PM10 mass concentration in Erdenet city. Probably caused

Formation of an unprecedented yellow snow episode in Xinjiang on December 1, 2018

open access: yesHeliyon, 2023
On 1 December 2018, a heavy yellow snow fell in Urumqi (87°37′E, 43°47′N) — the largest city of northwest China's Xinjiang province, which was the first case that the yellow snow has been observed in winter.

Dry intrusions and warm‐core development in Medicanes: Insights from a multi‐case analysis and the peculiar evolution of Ianos

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Mediterranean tropical‐like cyclones show a clear seasonality, with September cyclones exhibiting the deepest convection and Ianos representing the most extreme case. While one or more dry intrusions are typically detected during the cyclone life cycle, Ianos instead features two much weaker descending airflows.
