Weak Nuclear Divergence Despite Pronounced Mitochondrial Divergence Within a Widespread Desert‐Inhabiting Palearctic Lark (Aves: Alaudidae)

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Bar‐tailed Lark Ammomanes cinctura is a polytypic bird species with a wide distribution. One of its three subspecies, A. c. arenicolor, has previously been found to show deep mitochondrial divergence between its geographically most distant populations, from Morocco and Saudi Arabia, respectively.

Physiological cerebrospinal fluid interactions between brain and eye structures are altered after long‐duration spaceflight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Long‐duration spaceflight represents an extreme challenge, triggering adaptive responses including spaceflight‐associated neuro‐ocular syndrome, characterized by diminished visual acuity and ocular changes, which is a significant health risk for Mars missions.

The hypoxic ventilatory response and arousal burden predict the magnitude of ventilatory long‐term facilitation in humans with obstructive sleep apnoea

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The magnitude of progressive augmentation (PA) and ventilatory long‐term facilitation (vLTF) are two forms of respiratory plasticity that are enhanced in some humans with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This response might be linked to repeated nocturnal exposure to intermittent hypoxia or other traits connected to OSA.

Interpreting peripheral oxygen saturation variability in critical illness: A directional framework adjusted for hypoxia severity

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2${S_{{\mathrm{p}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$) exhibits a complex pattern of fluctuations during hypoxia, which can be quantified using entropy measures. SpO2${S_{{\mathrm{p}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$ entropy analysis provides insights into dynamic physiological regulation by non‐invasively reflecting the body's capacity to ...

Modulation of slow and fast oscillations by direct current stimulation in the cerebral cortex in vitro

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Direct‐current (DC) electric fields modulate spontaneous slow oscillations in cerebral cortex slices in vitro. Schematic of the in vitro preparation (upper panels). Spontaneous slow oscillations (SO; <1 Hz) consisting of alternating Up (active) and Down (silent) states were observed under control conditions.
