Aiming for the stomach and hitting the heart: dissociable triggers and sources for disgust reactions. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Disgust reactions can be elicited using stimuli that engender orogastric rejection (e.g., pus and vomit; core disgust stimuli) but also using images of bloody injuries or medical procedures (e.g., surgeries; blood [body] boundary violation [B-BV] disgust

Randomized, single‐centre, double‐blinded repeated dose investigation of safety and tolerability of ocular administrations of a novel silica eye drop product in healthy volunteers

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Managing ocular diseases often requires frequent eye drop administration, which can challenge patient compliance. A long‐acting eye drop technology using an amorphous synthetic silica composite was developed to address this. Our study aimed to assess the safety and tolerability of the Silica Eye Drop platform in healthy volunteers over

Provenance Analysis Based on Cluster In‐Betweenness and Support Vector Machines: Identifying Migrant Candidates Using Multi‐Isotope Fingerprints

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Provenance reconstruction using strontium and lead stable isotopes can produce complex multidimensional fingerprints, challenging traditional methods. Identifying nonlocals, who migrated between sites, is a major task. Migrants are identifiable by divergent multi‐isotope fingerprints due to isotopic mixing between origin and destination sites.

Evaluation of Fish and Macroinvertebrate Indices of Biotic Integrity in the Bioassessment of the Illinois River Basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Evaluating performances of the fish and invertebrate Indices of Biotic Integrity (IBIs) for a region is important to maintain rigorous assessment of the environmental quality of streams, especially with increasing urbanization. Timing of the assessment

sl(2, C) as a complex Lie algebra and the associated non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues

open access: yes, 2000
The powerful group theoretical formalism of potential algebras is extended to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues by complexifying so(2,1), thereby getting the complex algebra sl(2,\C) or $A_1$.

The development of type 2 diabetes amongst sibling pairs in the South‐South region of Nigeria: The effect of genetics, environment and lifestyle

open access: yesDiabetic Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Type 2 diabetes is a complex condition with a multifactorial pathogenesis. The pathogenesis is considered to be polygenic due to complex interactions between genetic/epigenetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study is to determine the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors associated with the development of type 2

Association between inflammatory burden index combined with D-dimer and acute kidney injury in elderly patients

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundThe interplay between inflammation and coagulation is central to the pathophysiology of acute kidney injury (AKI). This study aimed to explore the association between IBI and the incidence of AKI in the elderly, as well as the intricate ...

Extracellular vesicles released from melanoma cells constitutively expressing MHC class II promote immune evasion and cancer progression

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Here, we report the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from melanoma cells constitutively expressing MHC class II in the regulation of immune cell functions and melanoma metastasis. In particular, we observed an increased localization of HLA‐DRα, CAM receptors, PD‐L1, and STAT3 signaling proteins in the EVs.

Slow nocturnal body cooling during sleep increases interbeat intervals and is tightly coupled to high‐frequency heart rate variability in healthy men

open access: yesPhysiological Reports
During nocturnal sleep, core body temperature (CBT) decreases and cardiac inter‐beat intervals (IBI) increase. This study used a non‐disturbing cooling intervention during sleep to investigate additional effects of CBT reduction on IBI and heart rate ...
