Formation of Ice Covers and Ice Jams in Rivers

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1966
Ice covers on rivers are stressed in the downstream direction mainly by the friction of the under flow and the effect of the slope of the water line. Analysis show that in wide rivers, these stresses are the main factor governing the equilibrium thickness of the cover.

Sedimentary pellets as an ice-cover proxy in a High Arctic ice-covered lake

During the ice-cover period, initial ice-cover breakup precedes ice-jam flood events. Hence, it is important that breakup processes are well understood in order to be better prepared for ice-jam flood forecasting. Being able to predict ice-cover breakup provides an indication when ice-jam flood forecasting should commence.
