Life in Ice-Covered Oceans

Science, 1999
Recent reports that Jupiter's satellites Europa and Callisto may have ice-covered oceans have fueled speculation that they may be inhabited by living organisms. Gaidos et al. analyze the thermodynamic requirements for life on Europa by analogy with life on Earth today and during past "snowball" Earth episodes.

The Ice Cover

1986
The most obvious practical concern with ice cover in the Nordic Seas is that it directly obstructs ship operations and influences submarine operations. The ice cover also affects the climate, which in turn affects ship and air operations. Interactions of ice and ocean, especially near the edge, affect local oceanography and generate underwater noise ...

Formation of Ice Covers and Ice Jams in Rivers

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1966
Ice covers on rivers are stressed in the downstream direction mainly by the friction of the under flow and the effect of the slope of the water line. Analysis show that in wide rivers, these stresses are the main factor governing the equilibrium thickness of the cover.

Sedimentary pellets as an ice-cover proxy in a High Arctic ice-covered lake

Journal of Paleolimnology, 2008
Sediment aggregates (“sedimentary pellets”) within the sedimentary record of Lake A (83°00′ N, 75°30′ W), Ellesmere Island, Canada, are used to construct a 1000 year proxy record of ice-cover extent and dynamics on this perennially ice-covered, High Arctic lake.
