The effect of landfast sea ice buttressing on ice dynamic speedup in the Larsen B embayment, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
We observe the evacuation of 11-year-old landfast sea ice in the Larsen B embayment on the East Antarctic Peninsula in January 2022, which was in part triggered by warm atmospheric conditions and strong offshore winds.

Antarctic ice dynamics in warm climates [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2017
A geological record reveals that the Aurora sector of the Antarctic Ice Sheet showed contrasting responses to past periods of atmospheric warmth. The findings might help to predict the ice sheet’s response to modern warming. A geological record reveals that the Aurora sector of the Antarctic Ice Sheet showed contrasting responses to past periods of ...

Interfacial ice sprouting during salty water droplet freezing

open access: yesNature Communications
Icing of seawater droplets is capable of causing catastrophic damage to vessels, buildings, and human life, yet it also holds great potential for enhancing applications such as droplet-based freeze desalination and anti-icing of sea sprays.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Sea ice dynamics influence halogen deposition to Svalbard

open access: yes, 2013
. Sea ice is an important parameter in the climate system and its changes impact upon the polar albedo and atmospheric and oceanic circulation.

Screening and epitope characterization of Nidogen‐2‐specific nanobodies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Camel immunization and phage display were employed to generate high‐affinity VHH nanobodies against Nidogen‐2. After library construction, biopanning, ELISA screening, sequencing, and recombinant expression, selected nanobodies were purified and characterized, leading to the preliminary exploration of a nanobody‐based sandwich ELISA for specific ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Land–atmosphere feedbacks weaken the risks of precipitation extremes over Australia in a warming climate

open access: yesAdvances in Climate Change Research
The importance of land–atmosphere feedbacks on regional precipitation changes has been recently noted. However, how land–atmosphere feedbacks shape daily precipitation distributions, particularly the tails of precipitation distributions associated with ...

Crystal Growth in the Presence of Surface Melting: Novel Behavior of the Principal Facets of Ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We present measurements of the growth rates of the principal facet surfaces of ice from water vapor as a function of supersaturation over the temperature range -2 C > T > -40 C.

A synthesis of carbon dioxide and methane dynamics during the ice‐covered period of northern lakes

open access: yes, 2018
The ice‐covered period on lakes in the northern hemisphere has often been neglected or assumed to have less importance relative to the open water season. However, recent studies challenge this convention, suggesting that the winter period is more dynamic
