Air pockets and water lenses in the ice cover of the Slave River
Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2017Abstract Communities along the Slave River are concerned about changes in the river ice cover, such as the formation of air pockets and double layers of ice in the ice cover. These anomalies make it challenging to find suitable locations for river ice crossings in winter, necessary for the transportation of goods to and from remote regions and to ...

Geosciences Journal, 2016
The aim of this paper is to increase the understanding of ice lens initiation and growth in freezing soil. A model describing the growth process of ice lenses in soils has been established. The model presented here, which considers a series of processes, including heat transfer, water migration, phase change, ice lens formation, soil deformation, is ...

Self-organization in freezing soils: from microscopic ice lenses to patterned ground
Canadian Journal of Physics, 1990Freezing in moist fine-grained soils is a highly nonhomogeneous process. It involves transport of water to freezing sites and growth of distinct ice bodies separated by soil domains free of ice. On a much larger scale, recurrent ice growth and thawing of cold regions produce a rich diversity of patterns in soils; these patterns can be defined by local

A model for the prediction of ice lensing and frost heave in soils
Water Resources Research, 1980A model of the frost heave phenomenon in soil was developed. This model predicts ice lensing and heave rates as a function of the basic soil properties (thermal conductivities and particle size) and the externally applied boundary conditions (surface temperatures and overburden pressure).

Microscopic and environmental controls on the spacing and thickness of segregated ice lenses
Quaternary Research, 2011AbstractThe formation of segregated ice is of fundamental importance to a broad range of permafrost and periglacial features and phenomena. Models have been developed to account for the microscopic interactions that drive water migration, and predict key macroscopic characteristics of ice lenses, such as their spacings and thicknesses.

Relationship between growth rate and supercooling in the formation of ice lenses in a glass powder
Journal of Crystal Growth, 2002Abstract When a saturated powder is cooled below the freezing temperature of the interstitial water, the water sometimes forms ice lenses, which are layers of ice from which all particles have been expelled. To clarify the relationship between the rate of ice lens growth and the temperature at the growth surface, ice lens formation in a water ...
